Bloomingdale details schedule
for July 4 holiday festivities
BLOOMINGDALE -- Bloomingdale's July 4 celebration kicks off Wednesday with opening ceremonies at 6 p.m. at Bloomingdale Park.
The speaker will be the Rev. Mary Ann Smith of Shaffer Chapel McIntyre AME Church in Bloomingdale. Festivities will include the Ole Timers vs. Teeny Boppers softball game and summer games with a free weiner roast.
The schedule of events for Thursday includes the following activities:
¯ 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.: Pancake and sausage breakfast by donation at the Bloomingdale United Methodist Church.
¯ 12:30 p.m.: "Anything that Moves Parade" lineup at the top of county Road 39.
¯ 1 p.m.: Start of the "Anything that Moves Parade."
¯ 2 p.m.: Big Wheel races at the town hall.
¯ 3 p.m.: Plunger races at the town hall.
¯ 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.: Live music by New Age Adenas at Bloomingdale Park.
¯ 4 p.m.: Pet parade, starting at the post office.
¯ 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.: Movin and Groovin inflatables, dunk tank, Jell-O contest and frozen T-shirt contest.
¯ 10 p.m.: Fireworks.
Festivities also will include a 50-50 drawing, a Chinese auction and food. The celebration is sponsored by the Make-A-Difference Committee.
Harrison hospital workshop on
speech, swallowing disorders
CADIZ -- "Speech and Swallowing Disorders" associated with Parkinson's Disease is the topic for the next Lunch and Learn Workshop at Harrison Community Hospital.
The event will be held from noon to 1 p.m. July 11 in the hospital cafeteria.
Amy Beaver, speech/language pathologist at Harrison Community Hospital and Wheeling Hospital, will discuss potential speech and swallowing problems that are commonly seen in individuals with Parkinson's.
Lunch and Learn Workshops normally are held on the first Thursday of every month except December. However, because of July 4 falling on the first Thursday, July's workshop has been moved to the following Thursday.
The workshops are free to the public. Attendees may bring their own lunch or can purchase a meal in the cafeteria. A snack and beverages will be provided. Reservations are not needed.

Chicken blasts continue on
Wednesdays through August
WEIRTON -- The Serbian Men's Club chicken and beer blasts are continuing each Wednesday this summer through the end of August.
Chickens cost $8 each, and may be ordered by calling (304) 748-9866 on Wednesdays between 6 a.m. and 8:30 a.m.
Chickens must be picked up by 6 p.m. on the day they're ordered at the Serbian picnic grounds, located at 36 S. Kings Creek Road in Weirton.
The chicken blasts continue a tradition that's been held each summer since 1971 as a fundraising project for the men's club and the Holy Resurrection Serbian Church in Steubenville.
Satellite veterans office
open Wednesday in Dillonvale
STEUBENVILLE -- The satellite office of the Jefferson County Veterans Service Commission will be open from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday at the Dillonvale City Building, 135 School St., Dillonvale, to assist veterans, dependents of veterans, and/or veterans' widows with VA pensions, compensations, burials, schooling, medical assistance and other veteran's benefits.
For information or assistance, call the Veterans Service Office at (740) 283-8571 or visit the office at Suite 310, 500 Market St., Steubenville. Office hours are 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. On the second Wednesday of the month, the office closes at noon for a board meeting.

BERGHOLZ -- Alcoholics Anonymous Group 417 meets from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. every Thursday at Faith Community Church, 1500 state Route 524, Bergholz.
Funseekers to elect officers,
finalize plans for picnic
STEUBENVILLE -- President Dave Krause extended the welcome when the Funseekers met June 4 at Scaffidi's Restaurant in Steubenville, and introduced three new members -- Linda Aloi, Mary DeLeonardis and Gloria Jullian.
Joann Bugin opened the meeting with a reading of "Bless You, Friend," followed by a prayer and opening ceremonies.
Dinner was served to 60 members and guests.
After dinner, Barbara Jean Losey called several games of bingo with Terry Mamula the big winner.
During the business meeting, reports of the treasurer and secretary were read and approved. A thank-you note was read from Gloria DeMayo, sent in appreciation of a memorial gift given on behalf of her husband, Sam.
Krause reported on the activities of the nominating committee, noting candidates are still needed for president and chair for menu and entertainment. The election of officers will be held at tWednesday's meeting at Undo's in Weirton.
Details for the annual picnic on Aug. 18 are being finalized by the board. It will be held at the Follansbee Park Shelter House. A full report will be shared at the July meeting.
In a tour director's report, Regina Truax announced an addition to the 2019 schedule -- a trip to see Frankie Valli at the Rivers Casino on Aug. 10. For details and reservations, contact Truax at (304) 723-0419. All trips are open to everyone.

Cil Fritz and Barbara Jean Losey won the 50/25/25 drawing. Door prizes were presented by Larry and Pat Basil. Winners included Val Rowland, Mike DiBiasi, Larry Whitman, George Zyrini, Karen Krause, Char Pierce, Martha Veritek, Rich Sklenar, Marilyn Deleonardis, Ron Fallert, Linda Aloi, Linda Lenzi, Chuck Bugin, Diane Sagun, Mary Beth Bauer and Jane Barney.
The election of officers and final picnic details will be presented at Wednesday's meeting at Undo's in Weirton. Krause encouraged all members to attend.
