Toronto American Legion Post

hosting two special events

TORONTO -- The Toronto American Legion Post 86, located at 415 Market St., will be hosting two dances during the Toronto High School All-School Reunion festivities on Thursday through Sunday.

On Friday from 9 p.m. to midnight, Mike Styer and the Remainders will be performing. The cover charge is $5 per person.

On Saturday from 8 p.m. to midnight, DJs Mike and Paula will be providing music. There will be a $10 cover charge.

Hancock County Museum

Commission holds meeting

NEW CUMBERLAND -- The regular meeting of the Hancock County Museum Commission was called to order Aug. 1 with President Vivian Weigel presiding.

Reports were given by the secretary and Treasurer Bob McNeil.

Under old business, John Brenneman gave an update on the water heater project. He also said he is working with Maureen Vulgamore on loaning items to the VFW for the Last Man Event in November.

Linda McNeil reported hosting Barb Zimnox at the museum in preparation for seeking grant funding.

McNeil and Brenneman are working on preservation of donated scrapbooks.

McNeil announced she will be concluding her series of museum articles in "Our Hometown News" come October and suggested someone new continue or that guest columnists be sought.

Contact has been made with the genealogy society about having a joint ice cream social.

Under new business, Weigel reported a special tour was being arranged for a class reunion.

A monthly maintenance person to help with housekeeping chores will be hired.

The group decided to participate in the annual Riverfest, featuring old-fashioned games. Several members volunteered to work the booth.

A member of the museum commission will contact the Hancock County commissioners about presenting an annual update of museum activities.

The next meeting will be held Sept. 5 at the museum. Anyone interested in sharing the history of the county is welcome to attend.

Jefferson County Retired

Teachers to meet Sept. 10

WINTERSVILLE -- The third meeting of the Jefferson County Retired Teachers will be held Sept. 10 at Wintersville United Methodist Church, beginning at 10:30 a.m.

Speakers will include John Buch from the State Teachers Retirement System, informing members of changes to health care for 2020.

Kendra Burger, Ohio Retired Teachers Association liaison, will update members on the COLA and other items of interest.

New Cumberland Lions plan

pulled pork fundraiser

NEW CUMBERLAND -- The New Cumberland Lions Club pulled pork takeout fundraiser will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday in the parking lot of the Swaney Memorial Library.

The pork sandwich will cost $5.50. Coleslaw topping on the sandwich will be an additional 25 cents. Smoked chicken halves will cost $6. Both are available as dinners with two side dishes -- baked beans and potato salad or coleslaw -- for an additional $1.50.

Whole smoked pork butts will be available for $26 by advance order only.

To ensure receiving the half chicken (alone or as part of a dinner) or to order a whole pork butt, advance orders must be placed by 6 p.m. on Thursday by calling Don Deemer at (304) 564-5139 or Bob Manypenny at (304) 564-5055.
