Presentations on Alzheimer's,
dementia at library locations
STEUBENVILLE -- As people age, it's normal to have occasional memory problems, such as forgetting the name of a person you've recently met.
Alzheimer's, however, is more than occasional memory loss. It's a disease that causes brain cells to malfunction and ultimately die. The Alzheimer's Association is raising awareness that memory loss that interferes in daily life is not a normal part of aging and invites the community to a series of free upcoming community trainings hosted by the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County.
"Whether you're a family member, a caregiver, a professional or an interested member of the community -- you can benefit to come discuss the difference between Alzheimer's and dementia, disease stages and risk factors and current research and treatments available to address some symptoms," notes Karen Elliott, program director with the Alzheimer's Association Greater East Ohio Area Chapter.
The presentation will be offered four times at the following branches:
≤ Nov. 7 as part of a larger caregiver education training from 1-4 p.m. at the Schiappa Branch;
≤ Nov. 12, 11 a.m.-noon, Toronto Branch, 607 Daniel St., Toronto;
≤ Nov. 15, 1-2 p.m. at the Main Branch, 407 S. Fourth., St., Steubenville; and
≤ Nov. 19, 1-2 p.m. at the Tiltonsville Branch, 702 Walden Ave., Tiltonsville.
Interested participants should register through the Alzheimer's Association 24/7 Helpline at (800) 272-3900.
More than 220,000 Ohioans are living with Alzheimer's or another form of dementia. The area chapter provides a number of free local services, including free community education programs, along with clinical trial matching, one-on-one care planning and caregiver support groups. The local Alzheimer's caregiver support group meets on the third Thursday of each month from 6-7 p.m. in room 1506 at Eastern Gateway Community College. For information, visit alz.org/eastohio.
