WINTERSVILLE — There’s a special nutcracker twist to Valley Hospice’s fundraiser Saturday — “We Love the ’20s, Roarin’ Through the Decades with Valley Hospice” at St. Florian Event Center in Wintersville, beginning at 6 p.m.

All proceeds from the event will benefit Valley Hospice’s Cares Program, and to help raise funds for the cause, a “naked nutcracker,” donated by Nelson’s of Steubenville, will be auctioned off to the highest bidder. The winner will have the option to receive a standard nutcracker for display at this year’s Steubenville Nutcracker Village and Advent Market or a customized nutcracker for the 2020 season.

While attendees of Saturday’s event will have the opportunity to bid, those unable to attend also can participate, according to Kim Parker, marketing director. Absentee bids currently are being accepted and can be placed by calling Chris Orris of Valley Hospice at (740) 381-3666. For information, visit the Valley Hospice website at www.valleyhospice.org/calendar or call (740) 859-5650.

“We were searching for a way to increase the success of this fundraiser, and we knew that the Nelson family has been such a beacon of good for the community,” said Jennifer Taylor, development director for Valley Hospice, in explaining how the nutcracker auction idea originated. “The success of the (Steubenville) Nutcracker Village, combined with the generosity of the Nelson family, created a unique idea to showcase something wonderful in our community while raising funds for Valley Hospice. The partnership between the Nelsons and Valley Hospice highlights the good that can be done when we work together in our community. With the high demand and wait list for people to design their own nutcracker, we hope to provide an opportunity for someone to ‘win a trip to the front of the line'” and help Valley Hospice provide much-needed services to patients who need us,” Taylor noted.

Saturday’s fundraiser benefits the VH Cares program. “This program is comprised of several services we offer to our patients and their families,” Taylor said. ” Whispered Wishes grants end-of-life patients the chance to experience something they have dreamed of doing in their lifetime. Meaningful Moments provide aromatherapy, hand massage, stargazer therapy and pet therapy for patients in our care. Our Hero’s Salute program offers special services for those who have served their country. Our unfunded care program allows us to care for every patient, no matter their ability to pay. Unfunded care allows Valley Hospice to fulfill our mission and insure that no one faces the end of their life alone or in pain,” Taylor explained.
