welcome guests to party
TORONTO -- The Toronto Senior Citizens held their Christmas party on Dec. 12 at the Stratton Municipal Hall, welcoming guests Mayor John and Tracey Parker, Cheryl Clarke, Jeff and Becky Foster, Doris Kosegi and Jon and Jan Ramsey.
Joyce Zimmerman gave the blessing for the catered dinner. Entertainment was provided by John Grim. Cookies were collected from the members to distribute to city police officers and firefighters and members of TEMS.
Flowers were won by Bobbi Koltz, Shelby Smith, Chuck Grimm, Pat Simpson, Bob Richardson, Carole Eddy, Kathleen Elliott, Ken Woodward, Mel Simpson, Peg Ziarko, Ben Cicone and Peg Reynolds. Door prize winners were Terri Elson, Peggy Rose, Mary Ann Parker, Laura Mamula, Crissy Cunningham, Dorothy Farrister, Cheryl Clarke, Chuck Barker, Joyce Dobbs, Phil Cicone, Dolly Robinson, Irma Straka, Sharon Sims, Pat Richardson, Fran Sheets, Christina Huggins, Janet Boyuk, Jeannie Barker, Terry Mamula, Jeff Foster, Paul Koltz, Mary Kay Petras, Pam Dunlap, Bruce Huggins, Frank Vostatek, Wanda Woodward, Deanna Starr, Bonnie Emery, Nancy Nale, Richard and Mary Scott. Tim Elson won the 50-50 drawing.
The next meeting will be held Jan. 9 at a location to be determined.
Holiday changing date of
railroad retirees meeting
CHESTER -- Because of the upcoming holiday the NARVRE Unit No. 151 Railroad Retirees breakfast meeting date for December is different.
The meeting for December will be held Thursday. It will be held at EJ's Restaurant, 817 Carolina Ave., Chester, beginning at 11 a.m.
Normally, the monthly meetings welcoming all retired railroaders and crafts are held on the last Thursday of the month at EJ's Restaurant.
The purpose of the meetings is to help protect railroad pensions and help keep an eye on legislation that may affect them. It also is to foster a sense of solidarity. The average meeting time will be "an hour or so."

'Rooted in Our Heritage'
calendar inspires gardeners
NEW CUMBERLAND -- As interest in growing food and gardening continues to rise, West Virginia University and the WVU Extension are helping new and seasoned gardeners gain tips, educational information and more via the 2020 garden calendar.
Themed "Rooted in Our Heritage," the calendar features information on how to grow a wide variety of heritage crops, maintain a healthy soil, hand-pollinate plants and find an heirloom seed library.
The calendar also offers bonus materials and highlights that include growing advice, pest management tips, food preservation recommendations and recipes from WVU Extension Service experts.
To obtain a copy of the calendar, while supplies last or to learn about gardening and healthy lifestyles, contact the WVU Extension Service office in Hancock County at 104 N. Court St., New Cumberland City Building, Room 203 or call (304) 564-3805. Beginning in early 2020, the calendar also will be available online at the website at www.extension.wvu.edu/lawn-gardening-pests/garden-calendar and will feature bonus articles geared toward helping growers make the most of their gardening efforts.
