Brooke County Library to

display World War I posters

WELLSBURG -- The Brooke County Public Library at 945 Main St. will display eight posters detailing World War I from January through April.

Entitled "World War I: Lessons and Legacies," the display explores the history of the war and its lasting impact on American life. Sparked by the assassination of one man, the war eventually included the forces of the world's major industrial powers and more than 18 countries in all and ended with millions dead.

It's been said, however, that the war had some positive effects. Wartime technologies and medical advances resulted in new industries and novel ways to fight disease and treat disability and the critical roles that women played in the war supported their right to vote. Located in the library's media area, the display was organized by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service and the National Museum of American History with funding from the United States World War I Centennial Commission and the Smithsonian Women's Committee.

Scholarships applications

available through foundation

WHEELING -- The Community Foundation for the Ohio Valley announces 2020 scholarship applications are now available.

Applications can be obtained online at www.cfov.org by clicking the scholarships tab.

The Community Foundation for the Ohio Valley administers more than 70 scholarship funds and last year provided financial support to nearly 200 students throughout the Ohio Valley.

Susie Nelson, the foundation's executive director, said scholarships managed by it represent memorials for loved ones, an affinity for a particular major, attendance at a particular school or university, intended career path, financial need and may even be aimed at first-generation college students.

While each application has specific instructions, the application period for most closes Feb. 21, with recipients informed in late May. Nelson said, "Scholarships make a difference for local students as they prepare to take the next step in their educational journey. Through the generosity of donors, we are able to provide a diverse and meaningful assortment of scholarships to help finance an education."

Students seeking scholarships are encouraged to visit the CFOV website to explore opportunities. Questions may be directed to CFOV at (304) 242-3144 or jess@cfov.org.
