Country Friends beginning new

year with open mic on Monday

COLLIERS -- As the new year gets under way, Country Friends will not have any scheduled events tonight or Saturday but will hold its open mic night on Monday at the Memorial Hall located at 67 Police Lodge Road, Colliers.

The doors open at 4 p.m., the covered-dish meal is served at 5 p.m., and open mic begins at 6 p.m. and ends at 9 p.m. There is no cover charge on Mondays, but donations are appreciated.

Foundation accepts intern

applications, scholarships

CHARLESTON -- The West Virginia Press Association Foundation is accepting applications for summer internships at West Virginia newspapers and college scholarships.

Three $3,000 paid internships as well as unpaid internships at newspapers across the state are available through the foundation, which also awards scholarships of $1,000 or less to eligible students. In 2019, three West Virginia students were awarded packages totaling $4,000 each.

The application deadline is Jan. 20. The programs are open to students in fields such as journalism, business management, human resources, advertising, social media and marketing.

Preference will be given to students in at least their sophomore year of college.
