Community baby shower,
library open house Feb. 8
STEUBENVILLE -- A community baby shower and library open house to inform parents about the significance of reading during their children's development will be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Feb. 8 at the main library of the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County, located at 407 S. Fourth St.
The snow date is Feb. 22 during the same times.
The Ohio River Valley Elks No. 231, Martins Ferry, A.I.M. Women's Center, Catholic Charities, the Samaritan House and the Sacred Heart Center of Hope are collaborating to hold the event which will provide parents with free baby items -- diapers, wipes, books and other items -- as a gift for their attendance.
The event is geared to parents, expectant mothers and families with children and babies ages 0 to 2 who are interested in their babies' development in need of free baby items.
There will be a brief presentation at 1:15 p.m., repeated at 2:15 p.m., by Misty Teasdale, children's librarian, who will explain "the positive, powerful and long-term effects of reading to your children."
Parents are invited and encouraged to sign up for library cards. Two forms of identification are required -- a photo ID or driver's license and one other document indicating a current address, such as a utility bill.
Families may browse the second-floor children's library or participate in story time.
Light refreshments will be served.
Graphic novels about the
Holocaust to be discussed
WELLSBURG -- The Brooke County Library Book Club will discuss "The Complete Maus: I and II," which collects Art Spiegelman's graphic novels about the Holocaust, at 5 p.m. Jan. 30.

Wellsburg Elks Lodge plans
quarter auction for Feb. 15
WELLSBURG -- The Wellsburg Elks Lodge, at 834 Charles St., will hold a quarter auction Feb. 15.
Doors will open at noon for the event, which also will include a Chinese auction, various items for sale, a 50-50 drawing and food and drinks for sale.
Admission is $5, which includes one paddle, with each additional paddle $1.
The auction will begin at 1 p.m.

'Forgotten Communities of
Harrison County' to be topic
CADIZ -- An encore presentation of "Forgotten Communities of Harrison County" has been scheduled for 2 p.m. on Feb. 19 at the Puskarich Public Library.
Susan Adams and Kelley Michelli of the Harrison County Genealogical Society will present information about towns such as Duncanwood, Hattonia, Laceyville, Tappan, Little Zion Colony and Cassville.
With pictures, news clippings and court papers, the presenters will attempt to answer questions such where were the communities located? What did they look like? Who were the people who lived there? Why are the towns gone?
Mixed in with that will be some human interest stories and folklore.

Beginning beekeeping course
on Wednesdays starts Jan. 29
CADIZ --A beginning beekeeping course -- "everything you need to know to begin keeping bees" -- is a six-part session that will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays at the Puskarich Public Library, located at 200 e. Market St., Cadiz.
The sessions will be held on Jan. 29, Feb. 5, 12, 19 and 29 and March 4.
Participants will learn the benefits of keeping bees, equipment and supplies needed, honeybee biology, hive management, finding and purchasing supplies, bee problems and solutions and hands-on training to manage bees.
Free parenting classes being
offered through Starting Points
WEIRTON -- The Starting Points Brooke-Hancock Family Resource Center will offer a free six-week parenting class for parents of youth, ages 10-14, from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Feb. 24.
