Sweetheart Chocolate Walk
returns as fun fundraiser, break from winter blahs
STEUBENVILLE -- Historic Fort Steuben will again be offering a winter event, the Sweetheart Chocolate Walk, in downtown Steubenville.
It will be held on Feb. 15 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
"This was very popular last year, and we've had many people ask to do it again," explained Judy Bratten of Historic Fort Steuben. "It is both a fundraiser and a fun break from the drab winter weather," she said.
"The process is simple. A person purchases a $20 ticket, which will entitle the holder to a chocolate treat at each of the participating businesses. After visiting each site, participants will drop off their stamped tickets at the Visitor Center to be eligible for a drawing for a dinner for two at a local restaurant," Bratten said.
"Each business chooses the kind of chocolate treat it will offer so there should be a nice variety to take home," Bratten noted. "Although there is one treat per ticket offered at each site, a couple or family can participate by sharing the goodies. Many of the sites have additional bargains, too," she added.
"Most of the participating shops are along Fourth Street, but several others have joined this year that are located a few blocks away and have ample parking for those who prefer to drive."
Among the businesses that will be in the walk are BookMarx Bookstore, Leonardo's Coffeehouse, Steubenville Popcorn Co., Drosselmeyer's Nutcracker Shoppe, the Prodigal Daughter, Ohio Valley Handmades, Froehlich's Classic Corner, Yorgo's, the Urban Frontier and Elite Pro Coaching, Fort Steuben Visitor Center and the Antique Warehouse. A map with locations will be given with each ticket.
Half the proceeds from the event will go toward the educational programs at Historic Fort Steuben.
Only 50 tickets will be sold and will be available Feb. 3 at the Fort Steuben Visitor Center or by calling (740) 283-1787.
Weirton church welcomes
public to Sunday brunch
WEIRTON -- The First Christian Church, located at 3252 Main St., Weirton, welcomes the public to its February pancake brunch, which will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday in the fellowship hall.
The brunch includes pancakes, sausage, coffee, orange juice and milk. Tickets can be bought at the door for $5, with children under 3 eating free. For information, call the church at (304) 797-7300.
Underground railroad topic of
presentation Feb. 12 in Cadiz
CADIZ -- Celebrate Black History Month at the Puskarich Public Library in Cadiz by attending a special program planned for Feb. 12, beginning at 6 p.m.
Historian Paul Goebbel, guest speaker, will offer a presentation on the Underground Railroad in Ohio. He will feature stories about the underground railroad in the four corners and center of the state. It also will highlight an Ohio connection to the passage of the 13th amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

Master Gardener classes get
started on March 2 in Weirton
NEW CUMBERLAND -- Calling all gardeners.
"If you love gardening, why not take the opportunity to learn more and share your horticultural knowledge with your community by becoming a Master Gardener?" suggests Ann Bailey, WVU Extension agriculture and natural resources program assistant.
The West Virginia University Hancock County Extension is accepting applications to take the WVU Hancock County Extension Master Gardener classes that start on March 2.
The classes run for 12 weeks and will be held at the First Christian Church, located at 3252 Main St., Weirton. Classes are on Monday nights from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and are taught by WVU agriculture professors and others in the community.
Topics include home garden composting, square-foot gardening, turf management, gardening for life, basic botany, garden animals, herbaceous plants, plant diseases, small fruit trees, plant propagation, pruning, organic gardening and landscape design.

Dream Big, free after-school
music program, offered
WELLSBURG -- Dream Big, a program affiliated with the New Day Christian Center, offers free after-school music instruction to youth in grade 3-12, from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays at the Brooke County Public Library.
Private lessons in beginning piano and for most band instruments are available.

Hancock Health Department
announces food handler class
NEW CUMBERLAND -- The Hancock County Health Department will conduct a food handler class at the Mary H. Weir Public Library, 3442 Main St., Weirton, on Feb. 12, beginning at 2 p.m.
The class will be held downstairs in the library with participants able to enter through the front or side doors on Main Street; however, it is suggested that the more convenient entrance on the ground-floor level on Walnut Street be used.
The class is open to the public. Any person involved in food service in Hancock County is required to possess a current food handler card. The class is for volunteers as well as those employed in the food service industry.
The class is free, but there is a $10 fee to receive a food handler card good for one year. A two-year card may be purchased for $20 and a three-year card for $30.
Food safety cannot be taken for granted, according to a health department spokesperson. Food employees must be educated about safe procedures such as personal hygiene, cross contamination and improper cooking and holding temperatures.
Food handler training also may be obtained by going to the website to take the department's online class at www.HancockCountyHealthDepartment.com.
Payment for the online class may be made by using a credit card or Pay Pal. Participants also may print the complete verification and pay the fee at the Hancock County Health Department from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays. The office is closed from noon to 1 p.m. for lunch.

Country Friends to host
open mic session on Monday
COLLIERS -- Country Friends Foundation doesn't have an event scheduled for Friday or Saturday at the Memorial Hall located at 67 Police Lodge Road, Colliers.
Open mic, however, will be held Monday. The doors open at 4 p.m., the covered-dish meal is served at 5 p.m., and open mic begins at 6 p.m. and ends at 9 p.m. Country Friends is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the promotion of Christian friendship and brotherly love through music. C.H.A.N.G.E.: Help is available
for first-time homebuyers
WEIRTON -- C.H.A.N.G.E. Inc., in partnership with the Northern Panhandle Home Consortium, administers the down payment and closing cost program for first-time homebuyers.
Through the program, loans up to $10,000 are available for such expenses to approved homebuyers in Weirton and Brooke and Hancock counties.
The First Time Homebuyer Program works with most mortgage loan programs.
