Candids from Weirton Senior Center event
The contributed photos submitted recently and appearing on today's community page are from the Greater Weirton Senior Citizens Center's annual Christmas dinner-dance held Dec. 19.
The event was hailed as "a resounding success" with more than 100 attendees gathering for a dinner that included rigatoni, salad, a cheese tray, beverages and a cake from Gus's Goodies provided by member Ron Miller. Dance music was performed by the band Light Touch.
Members and volunteers thanked for their help with the event were Ruth Sperry, Bob Koon, Hattie Adams and Jan Shoup, her daughter Julie McAllister and her granddaughter Kyra McAllister.
Board member Mary Lucille Smith and member Tonie Gryskevich provided a wide array of gifts for the Chinese auction and door prizes, provided through the generosity of the business community, a spokesperson explained.
In other center happenings, Madonna High School students were at the senior center recently to help out and socialize with the seniors as part of their annual community day program.
February events at the center include the crowning of the king and queen contest winners to be announced at 10 a.m. on Feb. 14. The Valentine's Day events also include chess, bingo at 10 a.m. and card games from 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.
The February calendar notes the following weekday events:
MONDAYS: Chess, billiards and a sit-and-fit class at 10 a.m.
TUESDAYS: Chess, billiards, a 10 a.m. exercise class and 3 p.m. line dancing.
WEDNESDAYS: Chess, corn hole at 10 a.m. and a billiards tournament at 12:30 p.m.
THURSDAYS: Darts at 10:30 a.m. and a 12:30 p.m. euchre tournament.
FRIDAYS: Chess, bingo at 10 a.m. and cards games from 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.
The center will be closed on Feb. 17 in observance of Presidents Day.
Planning has begun for an open house and membership drive to be held in late March with a date to soon be announced.
