Sojourner Truth Federated Club

hosting membership event

STEUBENVILLE — Sojourner Truth Federated Club is hosting a membership social from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Feb. 28 at Eastern Gateway Community College’s Pugliese Center.

Activities will include fellowship, an exchange of information, games and refreshments.

Sojourner Truth Federated Club, which was organized on Feb. 4, 1973, is part of the Ohio Valley District of Colored Women’s Clubs and was named after Sojourner Truth, an African American abolitionist and women’s rights activist. She was born into slavery but escaped to freedom in 1826. She once met with President Abraham Lincoln and told him the story of her life as a slave.

The club is an affiliate of the National Association of Colored Women’s Clubs, the oldest black organization in the United States. The organization strives to advance the achievements of women and children.

The club has given clothing and financial donations to fire victims and those in need and has given donations to various local charities as well as hygiene kits, for example, to juveniles in jail. The club endeavors to provide financial aid to worthy students entering college or technical school, awarding students for high scholastic achievement, and recognizes outstanding young women in sports, a club spokesperson noted. Each year the club presents a $500 scholarships to a local graduating high school senior.

This spring, the club will be hosting its second quarter auction, which will feature vendors and concessions. The club also sponsors the Silver Bell Ball, an annual event held in November. The ball and quarter auction proceeds benefit the Sojourner Truth Scholarships Fund.

Rose Marie Slaughter is club president. Hazel Sweetenberg is membership chairman.
