OSU Extension notes program
changes in lieu of corona virus
STEUBENVILLE -- Ohio State University and Ohio State University Extension have announced the suspension of face-to-face instruction of lectures, discussion sections, seminars and other similar classroom settings and the move to virtual instruction, effective immediately and through at least March 30.
Also, events deemed nonessential between now and April 20 are subject to review, to evaluate whether they should continue in person, explained Erika Lyon, OSU Extension educator, agriculture and natural resources, Jefferson and Harrison counties.
"Based on these guidelines, we have decided to cancel the following in-person meetings scheduled for the next couple of weeks: 'What's in Your Soil' at Eastern Gateway Community College; East Ohio Women in Agriculture Conference at RG Drage; Farmers' Winter Breakfast Series: 'Hemp Production in Ohio' at OSUE Jefferson County," Lyon noted on a release.
The Harrison County farm tax meeting will still be held, but it will be hosted via webinar. "If this is something that you are interested in, give our office a call at (740) 461-6136 so we can get you the link."
The farm tax meeting is scheduled for March 24, beginning at 6 p.m. The $5 fee will be waived, so there is no cost to attend.
More webinar options may be available in the near future for some of these programs.
Pesticide exams will still be held with an upcoming local exam at the Harrison County Extension office on March 25. A study session will be held prior to the Harrison County pesticide exam, beginning at 7a.m. All pesticide and fertilizer re-certification classes will continue to be held across the state as usual.
"One of the best ways to prevent the spread of viral illnesses is to minimize the circumstances in which individuals might interact and transmit the diseases," the release notes. "The safety of our community is our top priority. We realize that our COVID-19 policy guidelines will cause disruption, but the risk of not acting outweighs the inconvenience of these temporary measures. We will share updates as more information becomes available."
Toronto Three Arts program
to feature cake decorating
TORONTO -- After a two-month hiatus, the Toronto Three Arts Club will resume on March 19, meeting at 6 p.m. at the home of Susan Kulstad on South River Avenue.
The program will feature member and pastry chef Margaret Martelle demonstrating the art of cake and cupcake decorating. Each person will have the opportunity to decorate a cupcake using the tools of the trade. For those members who have their tools from the last cake decorating program should bring them to use again.
Club members also are reminded that this meeting is a guest night. The hostesses should be advised of the number of guests being brought.
Relay for Life bingo benefit
set for March 29 in Wellsburg
WELLSBURG -- The 19th-annual Relay for Life bingo benefit will be held March 29 at the Wellsburg Banquet Hall, located at 1121 Yankee St.
Doors open at 1:30 p.m. with early birds at 3:30 p.m. and regular bingo at 4 p.m.
Tickets are $25 per person. For tickets in advance call Della at (304) 737-1686 or (304) 670-1153. The names of the first 100 paid players by March 23 will be entered in a special drawing.
More than $2,000 in prize money will be awarded. Payout is based on a minimum of 125 players.
There is a $1,000 coverall, instants and a 50-50 drawing. Various packages are available. There also are door prizes with food and beverages available. There will be free coffee.
Newview CEOS to host
snowflake craft class
NEW CUMBERLAND -- The Newview Community Educational Outreach Service volunteers will be hosting a craft class at the April 2 meeting at the Hancock County Senior Center.
Everyone is invited to join the group to make coat hanger snowflakes. "These are the same snowflakes that took this winter's Facebook pages by storm," a news release notes. The class is free of charge, but participants will need to bring with them 17 white plastic coat hangers and a pack of 4-inch plastic zip ties.
After the class, the club will take a break for lunch before holding the regular monthly meeting. April's topic is "Tai Chi for Health," presented by Betty Wagner. As always, the public is welcomed to join the group for lunch and the lesson. There is no charge for the lesson, but for those who choose to lunch with the club, the normal fee of $5 will apply.
Spring quilt show scheduled
at Fort Steuben Visitor Center
STEUBENVILLE -- Historic Fort Steuben will once again hold the annual spring quilt show in the Fort Steuben Visitor Center March 30 through April 10.
The popular event will feature old, new and cherished quilts from Ohio and West Virginia. Some are family heirlooms while others are purely decorative. The owners of the quilts have submitted personal information on many of them.
"We welcome quilts of all kinds," explained Paul Zuros, director of Historic Fort Steuben. "Visitors enjoy seeing the quilts, whether they are old or new, hand- or machine-quilted, they are all welcome here at the fort." I love to see the creativity, skill and love that goes into each piece. The quilt show is a wonderful way for visitors to see and appreciate these works of art."
Quilts are still being accepted for the show, but entry applications are required. Applications can be obtained from the Visitor Center at 120 S. Third St. by phone at (740) 283-1787 or online at the website www.oldfortsteuben.com/quiltshow.php. Entries must be submitted by March 18.
The exhibit will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday as well as on April 4. Admission is free, but donations are welcome.

Toronto group cancels
meetings indefinitely
TORONTO -- The Thursday Toronto Senior Citizens meeting and trips have been canceled out of consideration for its members, a news release from the group noted Thursday.
"All money that has been paid will be refunded by our treasurer. Once the coronavirus has been contained, the meetings will resume," the release added.
4-H Varieties to host
annual soup fundraiser
SMITHFIELD --The 4-H Varieties will be hosting their fourth-annual soup fundraiser, which will be held from noon to 3 p.m. on April 5 at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds kitchen in Smithfield.
The Easter Bunny will be in attendance throughout the duration of the event to meet all the children and be available for free photos.
Patrons, meanwhile, can choose from 10 homemade soups served with cornbread and a drink for a requested $5 donation. to die in or get takeout.
Homemade baked goods will be available for purchase, including "Cliff's Famous Peanut Butter Squares."
The fundraiser also will feature a silent auction featuring a framed Dave Barnhouse print, hotel stays with meal gift cards to Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack and Resort and Wheeling Downs; Pittsburgh Steelers autographs; Moundsville Penitentiary tours; and Dark View Haunted Attraction in Toronto passes. There also will be baskets featuring a variety of items. Donations of baked goods and items for the silent auction are being accepted. chapter visits train museum
STEUBENVILLE -- Members of the Edwin M. Stanton Chapter 1412 of Ohio Questers met at Naples in Steubenville for their February meeting.
President Becky Swickard extended the welcome and gave the blessing before lunch.
The business meeting included the announcement that the spring council meeting will be held April 16 and 17 at Roscoe Village. Members were asked to sign up for monthly programs for this year.
Hostesses for the day were Becky Bryan and Jayne Wilson.
After the meeting, the group walked to the train museum at 248 N. Fourth St. to see the exhibit made by Larry Caniff. It involves a three-room layout of the local mills and vicinity, especially historic Steubenville. Individuals interested in touring the museum can contact Caniff at (740) 346-6774.
Janet Neuman and Swickard will host the March 26 meeting that is scheduled to be held at the YWCA of Steubenville. The theme for the meeting will be "Ohio and the Great Depression."

to mark 25th anniversary
WEIRTON -- The Brooke-Hancock Family Resource Network will celebrate its 25th anniversary with a March 20 open house with refreshments and information about its various efforts. Visitors may stop by between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the community agency's office at 1300 Potomac Ave.
Story hour to be held
WELLSBURG -- The Brooke County Public Library will hold an evening story hour, with Kim Harless, at 5 p.m. March 18.
Children will enjoy a story, craft and snack. This week's story is "There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Frog," with a special activity provided by Darlene Stuckey of UniCare. Call (304) 737-1551 to reserve a seat for the free program.
AARP Chapter to meet
WELLSBURG -- AARP Chapter 3910 will meet at noon March 19 at the Wellsburg Moose Lodge.
