DAR Fort Steuben Chapter
gets briefed on JAC winners
WEIRTON -- The Fort Steuben Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution met March 14 for a noon luncheon and business meeting at Giovanni's Restaurant in Weirton.
The invocation was given by Nancy Valles with the Pledge of Allegiance led by Vickie Joseph; the America's Creed led by Second Vice Regent Mary Ann Jesse; and the national anthem led by Roberta Fedoush.
Registrar Susan Welch introduced prospective member Kim Ashton. Roberta Modranski was announced as a newly approved member.
The president general's message was read by Joseph.
Francine Hauldren, first vice regent, introduced the speaker, Vickie Joseph, who presented "The Colonial Household, DAR Program in a Box."
The business meeting included the reading and approval of the minutes from Recording Secretary Janet Rymer. Joseph gave the treasurer's report.
Under committee reports, Rymer read the names of the 2019 national winners of the Junior American Citizenship from the Fort Steuben Chapter.
Jefferson County Christian School national winners were:
Art banner group -- grade 11, first place, Ben Reed, Sam Reed, Michael Nicosia, Collin McMasters and Jacob Leas.
Short story -- grade 11, first place, Emily Martin.
Art poster -- grade 11, third place, Addie Caldwell.

The veterans committee report was given by Jeanne Vega.
In a 100th anniversary committee report from the board meeting, Dee Ann Greene noted the chapter is seeking a venue for the banquet on June 12, 2021, and the board approved the commemorative bench donation for Historic Fort Steuben.
The national defense report was given by Karen Blanc about camels in the U.S. Calvary.
Under old business, it was noted that 2021 program ideas should be given to Francine Hauldren.
New business included the announcement that the Ohio State Daughters of the American Revolution conference had been canceled.
Wednesday was the deadline for the Women in American History Award.
Volunteers are needed, it was noted, for schools chairperson and America 250 chairperson.
Joseph presented facts about the Veteran's Wall. Next year will commemorate the centennial of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
March birthdays and prayer concerns were acknowledged.
Members were reminded to fly their flags March 29, Vietnam Veterans Day. The next meeting had been scheduled for April 11 at Giovanni's Restaurant with the Rev. Ed Rudiger to present a program on the Revolutionary War. Members were reminded to bring items for the spring fling sale. That meeting has now, however, been canceled.
Nancy Courtney gave the benediction.

May meeting on living wills
STEUBENVILLE -- Fifteen members of the Ohio Public Employees Chapter 5, District 9, met March 11 at the YWCA of Steubenville.
Vice President Randy Smith presided at the business meeting where Joyce Summers led the prayer before the luncheon.
Fran Veltri won the 50/50 drawing.
The next meeting is planned for noon on May 13 at the YWCA of Steubenville with a program on living wills.
Toronto Legion still holding
two more Friday fish frys
TORONTO --- The Toronto American Legion Post 86 at 415 Market St. will hold two more Friday fish frys during Lent, offering carryout and deliveries only.
The final fish frys are Friday and April 10, Good Friday, both days from 11:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. The menu includes cod, fries, onion rings and slaw.

offered through library
STEUBENVILLE -- The Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County's free database, hoopla Digital, is offering a "Bonus Borrows Collection" through April 30.
Hoopla Digital offers unlimited copies and instant access to e-books, e-audiobooks, movies, television, comics and music so there is no waiting and no holds, explained Jennifer Cesta, the library's public relations coordinator.
"During this difficult time of sheltering at home, hoopla Digital has selected more than 1,000 titles without using your regular 30 monthly borrows," Cesta noted.
Bonus Borrows Collection includes adult fiction and themed collections, including:
≤ Take Time for You: A thoughtful collection of self-help titles on hoopla that encourage you to take a breath and think about what you want to work on -- for you;
