Italian Heritage Festival scholarships are announced along with Italian-American of the Year honoree Dewey Guida
WHEELING — The 38th-annual Undo’s Upper Ohio Valley Italian Heritage Festival has been canceled for this summer because of concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic, and the festival’s media night, set for May 20, also was a casualty.
Even so, the announcement comes from festival Chairman Michele Fabbro regarding scholarship winners and the Italian-American of the Year, which normally are revealed during media night.
Ali Bonomo, festival chair, introduced the 12 county scholarship recipients and where they plan to continue their education.
The seniors will each receive a $1,000 scholarship. Candidates for them must be from Belmont, Jefferson, Ohio, Hancock, Brooke and Marshall counties with two students from each county selected.

Tony Filberto, festival board of directors member, introduced this year’s Italian American of the Year Dewey Guida, who will be celebrated at the 2021 festival scheduled for July 23-25.
This year’s festival was to have been held July 24-26 at Wheeling’s Heritage Port.
Upcoming events scheduled include the second-annual Christmas gala dinner-dance to be held from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Dec. 6 with entertainment by Ray Massa and the Euro-Rhythms. The venue has not yet been determined.
The Italian wine tasting event, originally scheduled to have been held March 27, has been moved to next spring — April 9, 2021. It will held from 6 p.m to 8 p.m. at Casa Di Vino wine shop in Wheeling’s Center Market
Other events tentatively planned include a bocce tournament for July 24-25 to be held at the Bellaire Sons of Italy.
Live and taped cooking shows are being hosted by board members and others friends who love “Italian” in the kitchen. Italian music and dance (online) are provided by some of the entertainers who were scheduled to perform at this year’s festival.
