Procession tradition

-- Contributed

David Velegol Jr., front, and other members of St. Anthony Catholic Church of Follansbee participated in a procession May 10 in which a crowned statue of Mary was carried along city streets near the church to honor her as the mother of Jesus Christ. Roses donated in memory or honor of loved ones also were placed around the statue, while participants hung blue and white ribbons from their car windows, mirrors and antennas in a variation of an annual tradition tailored to support social distancing during the pandemic. The parade included about 48 vehicles, whose occupants prayed the rosary using cell phones.
