Serbian Men’s Club chicken

blasts on Wednesdays at

the Serbian Picnic Grounds

WEIRTON — The Serbian Men’s Club chicken blasts held at the Serbian Picnic Grounds of Holy Resurrection Serbian Orthodox Church have returned and “have been a huge success so far,” according to one volunteer involved with the annual fundraiser.

This week will mark the third Wednesday it is being held with the fundraising continuing through Sept. 9. Orders must be placed Wednesday between 6 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. for the hearth-cooked, slow-roasted poultry by calling (304) 748-9866. Chickens must be picked up by 6 p.m. The cost is $8. Open air dining is available.

Normally the chicken blasts kick off on the Wednesday after Memorial Day, but the coronavirus pandemic had delayed the start of the decades-old annual tradition held at the Serbian Picnic Grounds located at 36 S. Kings Creek Road in Weirton.

East Springfield Center having fundraiser dinner on July 9

EAST SPRINGFIELD — The East Springfield Community Recreation and Service Center is forging ahead with its monthly fundraiser dinners with some modifications.

The June restart of the dinners, for example, enabled patrons to get carry-out, including by placing an order for pickup and having it brought to them in the parking lot. There was no indoor dining because of COVID-19 safety precautions.

This month, however, patrons will be able to get carryout dinners but also enjoy indoor dining once again, according to an event volunteer. There will be indoor dining with social distancing observed, but patrons also can eat outdoors at picnic tables or get carryout.

Normally the dinners are held on the first Thursday of the month, but with this being the July 4 holiday week, the dinner will be held instead on July 9 from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

The menu will include cabbage rolls, mashed potatoes, corn, bread, dessert and drink. The price is $9.

Patrons can call in orders to (740) 543-3700.

The center is located on county Road 39 next to the East Springfield Volunteer Fire Hall.

57th-annual Peach Festival

will be held Aug. 8 in Weirton

WEIRTON — A meeting of the Peach Festival Committee of St. Thomas Episcopal Church on Three Springs Drive/St. Thomas Way was held, and after much discussion and a “go ahead” from the Brooke County Health Department and the West Virginia Episcopal Church Bishop, “it was decided that our little festival could be a morale booster for those who have been homebound since March,” a church spokesperson noted.

The 57th-annual Peach Festival will be held Aug. 8, but because of the coronavirus, there will be many changes in the festival activities so that protective measures can be observed.

Those changes will include food being available for takeout only with no dining room seating.

Details will be released at a later date.
