New scholarship program
provides high-speed Internet access for Ohio students
COLUMBUS -- In an effort to close the digital divide that has become apparent during the COVID-19 pandemic, Western Governors University Ohio is offering Online Access Scholarships, providing high-speed Internet service and access devices to its students who need but can't afford high-speed digital access.
"The COVID-19 pandemic has made it clear just how important reliable Internet access has become for so many aspects of our lives," said K.L. Allen, state director for WGU Ohio, a nonprofit, online-only university offering accredited bachelor's and master's degree programs in a number of in-demand career fields.
"At least 700,000 Ohio households are estimated to be without Internet service at home, a digital divide that's created a major roadblock for educators and students in this pandemic," Allen said. "WGU Ohio is committed to doing all we can to remove this barrier for our students."
In 2018, Ohio became the eighth state to partner with Western Governors University, a collaborative of state governors who saw -- more than 20 years ago -- the transformative power of competency-based education as a way to help close the skills gap and help busy working adults pursue in-demand jobs in health care, nursing, business, teaching and information technology, according to Allen. Today, more than 4,100 students are enrolled in bachelor's and master's degree programs at WGU Ohio.

Indoor yard sale Saturday at community center in Unionport
UNIONPORT -- There will be a large indoor yard sale at the Wayne Township Community Center in Unionport, set for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.
Food also will be available for purchase.
All proceeds from the sale benefit the community center.
All Saints Greek Orthodox Church's super gyro sale set
WEIRTON -- Organizers of the All Saints Greek Orthodox Church Greek Food Festival will be holding a super gyro sale from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Aug. 27 at the church's newly built food booth behind the post office facing the church on West Street.
The gyros may be pre-ordered by phone at (304) 797-9884 beginning Monday through 11 a.m. on Aug. 27, online at www.allstswwv.org or in person that day.
They are $7.50 each, with bottled water or pop available for $1 each.
"We encourage pre-order, pre-pay with a credit card at our online ordering link, which will be in operation two days prior to the gyro sale as well as from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Aug. 27," explained Nick Tranto, president of All Saints Greek Orthodox Church and co-chair of the 33rd-annual Greek festival.
"Walk-up orders can be placed at the gyro booth outside, and we will fill those orders in our kitchen and bring it out for pick-up," he said, noting there is no drive-through window, but the food booth is easily accessible from West Street with plenty of free parking.
Gyros can be picked up outside at the food booth in the parking lot next to the loading dock of the downtown post office (rear of building).
The church also is planning a one-day, take-out-only Greek Grab 'n Go Fest on Sept. 25 that will feature a variety of Greek food and sweets.
Old Construction and Mining Equipment Show Sept. 12-13
NEW ATHENS -- The 17th-annual Old Construction and Mining Equipment Show will be held Sept. 12 and 13 on state Route 519 (43672 Stumptown Road) between U.S. Route 22 and New Athens.
Antique trucks, construction and mining will be on static display and in operation throughout the weekend. Equipment owned by the Harrison Coal and Reclamation Historical Park, members of the HCRHP, Ohio Valley Chapter of the Historical Construction Equipment Association, Antique Caterpillar Machinery Owners Club Chapter 22 and other organizations will be displayed or in operation, such as draglines, shovels, trucks, crawlers and dozers.
The show runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sept. 12 and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 13. The Silver Spade operators cab and bucket are located on the grounds. The Silver Spade operators cab was painted in 2017 to the original colors it was in 1965.
The only times the location is open to the public is during show time and special events.
"The show is a great time to visit the grounds," a spokesperson noted.
A southern-style barbeque food stand by Two Guys and a Grill will be on location.
All antique trucks, construction, crawler and mining (surface or underground) equipment are welcome. Exhibitor camping is available on site.
Admission is $3 per person.
State and local health guidelines will be followed.
