'Century of Change' on display

at Historic Fort Steuben

STEUBENVILLE -- "From Canoes to Showboats: A Century of Change" -- an exhibit on the history, effects and stories of the Ohio River and the characters that became legendary -- is on display at the Visitor Center of Historic Fort Steuben through Oct. 17.

"The Ohio River is such an important part of the history of our area," explained Paul Zuros, director of Historic Fort Steuben. "The river was the main reason settlement and industry came to our area in the early days, and it continues to be one of our area's important assets," he said.

The exhibit consists of educational panels, models and information highlighting Steubenville and the Upper Ohio Valley. Also on display is an original copy of "The Navigator," written by Zadok Cramer and published in the early 19th century.

"We are really excited to have this publication on display as part of this year's exhibit," Zuros said.

"This book was so important to early navigation on the river. Imagine it as an early guidebook about how to travel the river. It outlines most of the river communities from Pittsburgh south," he continued. "It includes where to stop for supplies, where to forage salt from the hillsides and where you could stay overnight. But most importantly, it describes the many dangers in the river such as rocks and riffles to steer clear of."

Meriweather Lewis, part of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, had an early copy of Cramer's book with him when he descended the Ohio in 1802.

The exhibit is free and open to the public. Hours of operation are Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The exhibit has been produced in part by a grant from the Ohio Humanities Council, a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. For information contact Zuros at (740) 283-1787.
