OVH/Trinity School of Nursing Alumni Association update

Add the Ohio Valley Hospital/Trinity School of Nursing Alumni Association to the list of the many groups and organizations that have not been having a normal meeting year because of COVID-19.

The organization only meets twice a year — once in April, the other month October, but neither happened.

There was acknowledgment in the fall 2020 newsletter, nonetheless, that National Nurses Week was observed May 6-12, ending on what was the 200th anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. To commemorate her work, the World Health Organization had declared 2020 “The Year of the Nurse and Midwife.”

“The theme for 2020, ‘Nurses: A Voice to Lead — Nursing the World to Health,’ demonstrates how nurses are central to addressing a wide range of health challenges,” writes Andrea Hale, president, in the newsletter.

“All around the world, nurses are working tirelessly to provide the care and attention people need, whenever and wherever they need it,” she noted. “This year has been a very trying time with the coronavirus biting at our heels. Nurses and front-liners have all proven the importance of the medical field in all areas,” Hale continued. “We are all tired of the isolation, and hopefully, the vaccine will be available in the near future.”

Melissa Hassan, dean of the school of nursing, noted the school closed 2019 on a positive note, receiving the full five-year state approval from the Ohio Board of Nursing and recommended to receive the full eight-year continuing accreditation from the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing. With a 97.3 percent NCLEX-RN pass rate, Hassan noted the school is ranked third in the state of Ohio.

The school graduated 35 new nurses in July and saw 32 new students enter the program in August.

The mission of the alumni association is to support Trinity Health System School of Nursing, which operates out of Eastern Gateway Community College, and award scholarships each year — an accomplishment made possible through a fundraiser, dues and donations.

Current and prospective members are reminded that annual dues are $10. For information or to mail correspondence, send it to Treasurer Char Bianco at 2932 Linda Way, Steubenville OH 43952 or Blanche Williams, former president, 301 Williams Blvd., Winterville OH 43953.

The association’s covered-dish meetings traditionally are held at Starkdale Presbyterian Church, Steubenville, on the third Wednesday of April and October.
