Mingo Knights announce plans for fish frys, detail changes

MINGO JUNCTION -- The Mingo Junction Knights of Columbus Monsignor Joseph F. Dooley Council 4361 will sponsor fish frys from noon to 7 p.m. on Fridays during Lent, beginning Feb. 12 and ending March 26, at the council hall.

But there are changes to it because of pandemic precautions. There will be no dine-in or lobby sales, and the weekly events will be drive-through only in front of the building.

Patrons are to call in their orders to the hall phone at (740) 535-8037 or the extra line at (740) 314-2924, according to Shawn Zarych, grand knight. There will be time slots for patrons to select a time to pick up their order.

"When you order, we need your full name and your phone number," Zarych explained, urging that orders be called in early. "Once you come to pick up your order up, you are to park in the front parking spots only. There will be a sign there -- do not get out of your vehicle. You will need to call the phone number on the sign, which will not be the hall phone numbers. Do not call the hall. Call the number on the sign. We will bring your order out to you," he added.

Orders can be paid for by cash or by a check made payable to the Columbian Club of Mingo Junction.

The menu includes 1 pound of fish, fish sandwich, fish boat, fish dinner, shrimp dinner, haluski, macaroni and cheese, french fries, hush puppies, coleslaw and applesauce. For information, visit the Knights of Columbus Monsignor Joseph F. Dooley Council 4361 Facebook page.

Bridge design, build contest for middle, high school students

CHARLESTON -- The West Virginia Department of Transportation invites middle and high school students to participate in the 2021 West Virginia Bridge Design and Build Contest.

Students from all parts of the state have until 11:59 p.m. March 12 to register for the contest, download bridge design software and come up with a design for a proposed bridge. There is no cost to participate in the competition, which teaches students about engineering in an interactive way. Finalists will be notified by March 16, with the final competition to be held virtually March 27.

"The contest allows students from all over the state to try their hands at bridge design," said Ryland Musick, deputy state highway engineer, who has been involved with the contest since its inception.

"But the contest is really about inspiring and encouraging young would-be engineers and showing students one of the many options available for employment in their home state."

For details and to register and download the required software, visit wvbridgedesignandbuildcontest.com.

Musick added that the contest began as part of a national bridge design contest created at West Point.

"We had the first team in the nation that won the national contest two years in a row," he said.

When the national contest shut down in 2016, software designers made the bridge design software public. Highways officials in West Virginia revised the software and carried on with the competition.

Jennifer Dooley, a contest committee member, said the software is very user-friendly and students shouldn't feel they must be excellent in math or science to try it.

Meet Mary Todd Lincoln through library program

STEUBENVILLE -- Meet Mary Todd Lincoln as portrayed by librarian Laura Keyes in the "Mrs. Lincoln in Love" virtual program for the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County's, starting Friday.

Mary Todd Lincoln lived a life filled with triumphs and tragedies, but few people know her story. Now, Keyes shares that story in an entertaining and educational program entitled "Mrs. Lincoln in Love," which is set on Jan. 31, 1862, when Mrs. Lincoln and her family are settled comfortably in the executive mansion. Visiting with ladies during afternoon tea, Mrs. Lincoln reflects on the loves of her life -- her children, husband and country -- and even shares some of Lincoln's love letters to her. Learn how Mary's knowledge of politics and social customs made it possible for a backwoods frontier attorney to achieve the highest office in the land. Watch the program any time Friday through Feb. 28 on the library's YouTube Channel, PLSJ.

Starting at /week.
