Fort Steuben Chapter, DAR, had nine national JAC contest winners

STEUBENVILLE -- The Fort Steuben Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution held a Zoom meeting on March 13.

Vickie Joseph, regent, called the meeting to order. Nancy Courtney, chaplain, gave the invocation; JoAnn Morrison led the Pledge of Allegiance; Mary Ann Jesse, second vice regent, led the American's Creed; and Parlimentarian Nancy Valles led the singing of the national anthem.

Joseph introduced prospective member Ashley West and Tammy Barrick, Arizona state registrar and associate member.

Denise Doring VanBuren's video of the president general's message was played. Joseph introduced Susan Guy, a local author who was the guest speaker.

During the business meeting, Recording Secretary Janet Rymer read the minutes of the last meeting. Patti D'Aurora gave the treasurer's Report.

Under committee reports, it was noted that a chairman is needed for the Junior American Citizens committee. Valles will co-chair. The next topic is "The 100th Anniversary of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier: Rise and Shine for Duty, Honor and Patriotism."

Rymer announced that this year, the Fort Steuben Chapter had nine national winners in the JAC contest. They were:

* Derrick McMasters, Carl Young and Sofia Pelodniak, first place group banner;

* Rebecca Downs, second place, poster;

* Addie Caldwell, second place, poster;

* Chase Hervery, third place, stamp design;

* Geneva Wise, second place, poem;

* Seth Richardson, second place, short story; and

* Michael Nicosia, first place, short story.

Congratulations were extended to the winners with appreciation expressed for Nancy Courtney, teacher.

Rymer, co-chair of the 100th anniversary committee, reminded members that the bench dedication will be conducted at the chapter's May meeting at Historic Fort Steuben at noon, prior to the start of the regular in-person meeting there. It is hoped all members attend the outdoor event. Programs for the event will be printed.

In a schools report, Chair Hollie Hinton explained the process for electronic Box Tops for Education.

Under old business, members were encouraged to give 2020-21 program ideas to Francine Hauldren.

The DAR virtual state conference was to be held March 18-21.

More volunteers are needed to adopt a prospective member, it was noted.

Under new business, it was announced that Barrick would be having a virtual paper party on March 14.

The DAR genealogy lecture series is free online.

The 130th Continental Congress Online Credentials are due by April 15.

For Women's History Month, there are live virtual tours at the DAR museum.

The Vietnam Veteran's report was given by Karen Blanc, national defense chair, who announced that March 29 is National VietNam War Veteran's Day

The next meeting is through Zoom on April 10. The in-person meeting at the fort is May 8.
