HAMMONDSVILLE — The Edison Local School District is making reading fun with a sports-themed virtual Family Literacy Night on Wednesday.

District Assistant Superintendent Julie Kireta said activities will take place online through Google Meets from 6-7 p.m. and is aimed at Stanton and John Gregg Elementary students.

The theme is âReading: A Sport for All Seasonsã and will include books, crafts, activities, snacks and even some possible appearances from school and NFL athletes and mascots. âItás going to be for kindergarten to third grade,ã Kireta said. âWe will have Google Meet set up and send a link through the district email to the grade bands. Teachers also will put it in their Google Classroom stream so there are two ways to participate. We will do one per grade level and then weáll have random prizes for students.ã

The lineup includes a video appearance from the Cleveland Brownsá J.C. Jetter with a possible cameo by Chomps the team mascot, a read aloud by Edison High School athletes, activities and crafts with educators, door prizes and special guest Eddie the Wildcat. Books and other materials will be sent home as well as snacks for students to enjoy with their family.

Kireta said officials wanted to hold an activity since the coronavirus pandemic affected regular back-to-school and literacy events this year.

âWe thought weád give this a try. We think the kids will enjoy it,ã she said. âWe wanted to do something for the students that they would enjoy a lot.ã

She organized the event with the help of district Administrative Assistant Fatima Smuck and educators Miguel Brun, Michelle OáKarma, Angie Smith, Kathy Stewart, Barb Mohnacky, Summer Householder and Mindy Carpenter. Prizes were donated through the Browns Foundation.
