OGS Jefferson County Chapter kicks off lecture series April 25

STRATTON — The Jefferson County Chapter, Ohio Genealogical Society, has announced its free lecture series schedule will kick off later this month.

The chapter’s office is located at 501 Fifth St., Stratton, and is open only on Thursdays from noon to 4 p.m. as of March. Check the website at www.jeffcochapter.com for additional days and hours. Its Facebook page is “Jefferson County Genealogy Society.”

Flora L. VerStraten-Merrin is serving as president of the chapter for 2021. Other office holders are: Rena Goss, vice president; Naomi Furbee, treasurer; Edward Merrin, senior trustee; Tammy Hosenfeld, chair of first and pioneer and Civil War families and query researcher; and Michelle VanDine, newsletter editor.

Office workers are Connie Rohall, Goss and VerStraten-Merrin.

The lecture series is free and open to the public with all programs beginning at 1 p.m. at the Stratton Municipal Building, located at 136 Second Ave., Stratton.

Local author Susan Guy will be the first series speaker with her program on April 25. Guy has published two works — “Moonlight Mill Murders,” Steubenville, Ohio (True Crime) and “Mobsters, Madams and Murder” Steubenville, Ohio (The Story of Little Chicago).

Attendees are encouraged to bring their copies of these books to the event for a book signing.

Paul Zuros, director of operations at Historic Fort Steuben and the Steubenville Visitors Center, will be the presenter at the Sept. 12 program.

His presentation will include excerpts from his columns that run in the weekend editions of the Herald-Star and The Weirton Daily Times.

Rounding out the series will be lecturer Katy Zane, certified archivist, addressing “How to Archive and Preserve Documents and Photos.” This is set for Nov. 21.

Zane received her master’s degree in library and information science with an advance certificate in archival studies and record management from Wayne State University in 2018. She has worked as a librarian and archivist for West Liberty University for two years and recently has been promoted to head of learning resources. She presented at a statewide conference in 2018 on how to educate students about library resources, and she has taught more than 75 classes to students about database navigation.

Zane is enrolled in Marshall University to earn her doctorate in education in leadership skills.

As of March, masks are required and social distancing. The banquet room is large and the seating will be safely set up in advance, according to VerStraten-Merrin.

To check on any changes in policy, contact the Stratton Municipal Building prior to the chapter’s event.

Attendees should bring their own bottle of water or soft drink.
