Commemorating a centennial

SPECIAL SEAT — May 8 was the date and Historic Fort Steuben the location for members of the Fort Steuben Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution to donate a bench commemorating the chapter’s 100th anniversary. STEUBENVILLE -- The Fort Steuben Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution met May 8 at Historic Fort Steuben where the dedication of a commemorative bench donated to the fort in honor of the group's centennial was conducted.

Regent Vickie Joseph extended the welcome, and Chaplain Nancy Courtney gave the invocation. Nancy Valles led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Roberta Fedoush sang the national anthem. Denese White introduced guests Jerry Barilla, mayor of Steubenville, and Judy Bratten, the fort's assistant director. Bratten delivered a brief history of the chapter, and Barilla read a proclamation declaring May 8, 2021, as a day to honor and celebrate the chapter's 100 years of commitment and patriotism.

Karen Blanc, bench co-chair, introduced Janet Rymer, co-chair, who presented the bench. Other members also were introduced.

Held later, the business meeting began with the American's Creed led by Mary Ann Jesse, second vice regent.

Registrar Susan Welch introduced prospective members, Griselda Taylor and Ashley Otto West.

First Vice Regent Francine Hauldren read the president general's message.

Recording Secretary Janet Rymer read the minutes of the last meeting. Vickie Joseph gave the treasurer's report.

Under women's issues, Lori Massaro noted May is Stroke Awareness Month and spoke about recognizing the signs of a stroke.

The JAC continues to need a new chairman.

Melinda Young is the new chairman of the scholarship committee. Winners of the 2020-21 high school scholarship are Connor Gibson from Oak Glen High School and Madison Phillips from Edison High School.

The 100th anniversary committee has announced the tentative date for the 2022 gala is May 14.

The 130th Continental Congress will be a virtual event.

Under new business, the chapter voted to donate $100 to the Stars for our Troops Program.

Union Cemetery work will be done on May 21, beginning at 10 a.m. with Sue Davidson, Patti D'Aurora, Donna Dennis and any other member who wants to help. The chapter voted to donate $50 for supplies.

Joseph read a story about DAR members and the Titanic.

Members have been invited to open the Frontier Days at the fort.

Denese White spoke about the Cameo Society.

Mary Ann Jesse reported that the Pennsylvania Annual DAR meeting was in Pittsburgh.

Beverly Livingston gave the sunshine report.

Nancy Courtney gave the benediction.
