New members, guests noted at Antonio Meucci Lodge meeting
WEIRTON -- The Antonio Meucci Lodge No. 2506 Sons and Daughters of Italy met May 11 at Undo's in Weirton.
Vice President Tony LaRosa read the invocation and wished everyone a happy Mother's Day. Carl Truax led the Pledge of Allegiance. All members joined in singing "God Bless America" before the sit-down dinner.
The roll call was taken, and minutes were approved as read by Secretary Rita Orler. Norma Henson gave the treasurer's report, which was approved and filed for audit.
President Regina Truax introduced new members JoAnn Llewelyn and George Williams and guests Harold Synder, Sherry Higgins, Lola Swanagan, Terry Mamula and Laura Mamula. She announced that the Order Sons of Italy in America convention will be held June 26 in Morgantown, and all members are invited to attend.
Truax announced that Larry Purks was appointed orator and Barbara Purks will serve as sergeant at arms. She introduced Jack Giacomel, who entertained members with music from the 1960s and 1960s along with music that highlighted all cultures.
Birthday and anniversary wishes were acknowledged for May celebrants. Cards were sent to the families of members or members.
A number of bus tours were announced. They included: June 10, Rivers Casino, Pittsburgh; June 18, the Shoji Tabuchi Musical Show, Ohio Star Theater, Sugarcreek; June 25, Sugarcreek shopping and more; July 16, Hartville Market Place and Flea Market, Hartville, Ohio; and Aug. 26, MGM Casino, Northfield, Ohio. The Undo's gift certificates were won by Carol Irvin and Linda Phabe.The 50/50 was won byRita Orler. Door prizes were awarded to Linda Phabe, Dolores LaRosa, Barbara Cerra and Norma Henson.

Brilliant Lions Club members discuss tag day, projects
BRILLIANT -- A recent tag day fundraiser conducted by the Brilliant Lions Club and held at several locations was successful, club President Butch Ford announced at the organization's May 20 meeting.
The meeting included the announcement that members will be cleaning up the McGee Cemetery as a club project this month.
There will be a Memorial Day parade Monday in the village, and the Lions Club has been asked to participate.
Donations for flowers for a raised flower bed at Rivers Landing are needed, it was noted. Dave Porter asked for help in building a wall by the Brilliant Post Office.
Glen Dennis gave the prayer after the pledge to the flag. Door prize awards were won by Lamont McCoy and Porter.
The next meeting will be held June 3.
ADK Fidelis Gamma Chapter announces earning of pearls
WEIRTON -- The West Virginia Fidelis Gamma Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa Honorary Teacher's Sorority met at the Garden Grill Steakhouse in Weirton on May 6.
Chaplain Bonnie Queses presented the thought of the day, reading the history of Mother's Day, which was started in Grafton, W.Va., by Anne Jarvis. It became a national holiday in 1914 as proclaimed by President Woodrow Wilson. Two poems shared were "Mother -- The Angel at My Side" and "Your Mother is Always by Your Side."
President Diane Higgins recognized members' birthdays. Treasurer Carolyn Allison presented the March 2020-21 financial report. Members were reminded of their birthday obligation.
Alpha Delta Kappa Month Chairman Susan Cullinan reported that sisters presented a play for the Ohio Valley District meeting and signs were placed around the county.
Cullinan gave the altruistic report. Clothes and furniture items had been donated, service hours were tallied and various monetary donations were made.
Bylaws chairman Janet Benzo explained the new title for Alpha Delta Kappa, and a change to the district meeting this year.
Liz Pugh, scholarship chairman, reported that the scholarship applicants were reviewed, and the honoree will be invited to the June 3 meeting.
Under unfinished business, a hostess sheet was circulated. Pugh will take the position of fraternity education chairman. It was announced that an Ohio Valley Spring District meeting will not be held.
Under new business, Fidelis Gamma has earned six pearls, and congratulations were extended to Sandy Anderson for her 10-year membership in Alpha Delta Kappa.
The ADK Sisters will be voting in June on the project for world understanding.
The hostesses for the meeting were Garden Grill and Steak House and Higgins.
The meeting was adjourned with singing of "The Lamp of Alpha Delta Kapp."
The next meeting will be held June 3.
Weir High School Class of 1971 all ready for 50-year reunion
WEIRTON -- It's all systems go for Weir High School Class of 1971 50-year class reunion.
It will be held on July 3 at Undo's Restaurant at the Holiday Inn in Weirton.
"We would love to see everyone come, even if you haven't been to any other reunion," a reunion spokesperson noted. "Please consider coming to our 50th."
There will be a buffet, a DJ, a photo booth, possible trivia challenge about the happenings of 1971 and other activities during the evening. The class picture will be taken at 6 p.m. by Newbrough Photography.
Classmates who have not received an invitation in the mail are urged to contact Peggy Baker Huyghe at (304) 670-4537 or send a check for $45 per person to her attention at 1208 Hanlin Way, Weirton WV 26062.
Memorial Day service in Eldersville
ELDERSVILLE, Pa. -- The Jefferson Township Historical Society will be holding its annual Memorial Day service on Monday at 8:45 a.m.
"We are expecting the honor guard at around 9 a.m., and as soon as they honor our veterans we will then have a small service," explained a society spokesperson. "After the service there will be doughnuts, coffee and water served in the white church across from the fire department on Fire Road. This sits behind the veterans memorial so everything is within walking distance and there is parking at the fire department."

Free concert set
FOLLANSBEE -- The first in a series of monthly free concerts at Follansbee Park sponsored by the Follansbee Chamber of Commerce will be held at 6 p.m. Monday and feature Wheeling dance band Twice As Nice.
Chamber members are invited to set up booths during the event.
