WINTERSVILLE -- June 5 is shaping up to be a day to help animals in need as the Jefferson County Humane Society prepares to host an open house from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. offering fun activities, information about the programs offered and "yummy food."
The open house will be held at the Jefferson County Animal Shelter, located at 200 Airpark Drive, Wintersville, with June 12 as the rain date, according to Brandi DeNoon Damewood, marketing and outreach manager, who noted everyone is welcome, including children and leashed pets.
It will be held on the same day as the fourth-annual Companion Animal 10K/5K Run/Walk fundraiser, which has an 8:15 a.m. start time.
The race is a fundraising event to benefit the Companion Animal Care Fund at the Jefferson County Humane Society, Damewood explained. "This fund is designed to give a helping hand to owners whose pets need veterinary care, but can't afford the full cost. Through the 'shared-cost' program, more pets have access to necessary veterinary care that otherwise would not," she said.
Registration begins at 7:15 a.m., onsite, at the starting line located at the old Cross Creek Police Department building, which is beside the animal shelter. Friendly, leashed pets are permitted.
Parking is located by the soccer fields.
Cash, credit and debit card payments are accepted. The registration fee is $20. The race will end at the Jefferson County Animal Shelter.
Those unable to attend the race or open house but would like to make a donation can do so by visiting the humane society's web page to make a paypal donation at https://jeffersoncountyhumanesociety.net/
Scheduled events for the open house include: 1 p.m., blessing of the pets; 2 p.m., a K-9 demonstration with Rob Cook; and an animal behavior class demonstration with a humane society behavior specialist, the time of which is to be announced.
