Hancock County CEOS holds June meeting, plans for others
CHESTER -- The Hancock County Community Educational Outreach Service held its June luncheon meeting at EJ's Family Restaurant in Chester, with nine members in attendance.
The pledge to the flag and devotions were led by Laura Greathouse.
The "thinking-of-you" cards signed last month were well received by the residents of Foxcrest at the Orchards, it was announced.
The upcoming food preservation classes, "From Garden to Pantry, Preserving What You Grow," was discussed, including ways of moving forward with the classes while maintaining WVU COVID protocols, particularly with the June 23 class involving making jams and jellies.
Members said they hope life will have returned to normal come August and September when the canning and freezing/dehydrating classes are held.
Each hands-on class costs $15 and includes a working lunch. Participants will then take home with them the food they have prepared. Because class size is limited, an RSVP is required. Anyone interested in attending the classes, especially the jams and jellies class, should contact the Hancock County Extension Office at (304) 564-3805 as soon as possible.
Beginning next month, the CEOS will resume their monthly lessons although, at this time, the public cannot be invited to attend as they have been in the past. The lessons for the remainder of the year are:
* July: "Rivers of West Virginia," presented by Virginia Lawrence;
* August: "History of the Star-Spangled Banner," presented by Janet Keller;
* September: "Heritage Foods," presented by Laura Greathouse;
* October: "Mental Health Issues Facing Today's Youth," presented by Roseanna Ash; and
* November: "The Importance of Nature to Our Health and Well-being," presented by Laura Greathouse.
There will be no meeting in December.
Members are reminded nominations for 2022 officers will be conducted at July's meeting, with election taking place at the August meeting.
Irondale church is hosting strawberry festival Wednesday
IRONDALE -- The Irondale United Methodist Church on Grant Street is having a strawberry festival from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
The menu includes hot dogs, hamburgers, sloppy joes, potato salad, macaroni salad, pasta salad, baked beans and a variety of strawberry desserts, all for a donation to the church.

STEUBENVILLE -- The Steubenville High School Class of 1959 has scheduled a noon luncheon at the Ville in Steubenville on Wednesday for any and all classmates able to attend.

Low-cost spay, neuter clinic has appointment openings
STEUBENVILLE -- The Brooke County Animal Welfare League will hold its next low-cost spay and neuter clinic -- RASCAL -- on July 10 and 11 at the Steubenville American Legion Post on North Fifth Street, Steubenville.
RASCAL is an acronym for Roaming Animal Sterilization Clinic at Low Cost.
"Interested pet owners must call (304) 374-4443 immediately as appointments are limited and required -- no walk-ins," a spokesperson explained.
Appointments are not limited to Brooke County residents.
SHS Alumni Association plans meeting for Wednesday
STEUBENVILLE -- The Steubenville High School Alumni Association will meet on Wednesday at Scaffidi's Restaurant and Tavern in Steubenville.
The meeting will begin at 6 p.m.
Webinar session on June 23 looks at scams aimed at seniors
STEUBENVILLE -- The Ohio State University Extension and the office of the Ohio Attorney General will unite for a webinar session on senior scams from 11 a.m. to noon on June 23.
"Seniors -- age 60 and up -- are particularly vulnerable to fraud and scams; however, many incidents go unreported," a spokesperson noted. "Learn about the latest scams targeting our senior population and find out how to protect yourself and your loved ones."
There is no cost to attend the webinar, but pre-registration is required. Register at go.osu.edu/2021jeffcoseniorscams.
Library to show 'The Courier'
