Library offers summer reading challenge, variety of programs

STEUBENVILLE -- Join the "Throwback Summer Reading Challenge" at the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County. Children, teens and adults can join in person by visiting a library branch or online at www.steubenvillelibrary.org.

For adults: "The Greatest Sitcoms of All-Time" is available from July 1-31 on the library's YouTube channel, PLSJ. Author and pop culture historian Marty Gitlin will talk about how sitcoms have evolved during the decades in presentation and content. He will offer trivia and feature snippets of the most beloved sitcoms in American history, including "I Love Lucy," "The Andy Griffith Show," "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," "All in the Family," "Cheers," "Seinfeld" and "The Big Bang Theory."

For teens: "Pet Rock & Rock Cacti" is on Wednesday on the library's YouTube Channel, PLSJ. Stop by the Schiappa Branch to pick up a take-home kit, then watch for instruction on the library's YouTube channel.

In-person offerings for adults at each library location include:

"Taste the World" take-home begins July 1 while supplies last. Stop by to receive a sample of Za'atar, a famous spice blend from the Middle East. Each take-home kit will have a spice packet, history of the spice and recipes. Library patrons can expand not only their taste buds, but their knowledge when they access the website and learn recipes from all corners of the world using A-Z World Food database.

In-person for children at each library is a take-home Fourth of July craft. Stop by any library branch on Monday to pick up a take-home craft.

Adults: The Stitch in Time group will meet July 2 from 10 a.m. to noon. Take knitting, crocheting, needlepoint or a sewing project to work on inside the library.

The book club will meet on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. to discuss "The Widows" by Jess Montgomery. Call to join.

Children: Medieval Knight is Tuesday at 11 a.m. A librarian in full armor will present a variety of medieval arms and armor with demonstrations. This is an outdoor program that may be rescheduled in the event of rain.

Friday fish frys aid Colliers Fire Department Auxiliary

COLLIERS -- The Colliers Fire Department Auxiliary holds fish frys for take-out from its kitchen at 341 Pennsylvania Ave. from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. each Friday.

In addition to breaded fish and fries, the menu includes many other entrees and appetizers, including shrimp, chicken strips and hot dogs.

Sycamore summer concert series continues Saturday

STEUBENVILLE -- The Sycamore Youth Center at 301 N. Fourth St., Steubenville, continues its summer concert series featuring local and nationally known artists on Saturday nights from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

This Saturday will feature the harmonies of the vocal group "Blest" -- the Brookes sisters Annie, Connie and Sherolyn from Toronto. The trio was the group category winners of the Valleys Got Talent in 2020. Also performing will be flutist Pamela Bauman of Wintersville and vocalist/keyboardist Shaina Thornton of St. Clairsville, who leads the praise and worship at New Life Church in Wheeling.

Sy's Cafe, which is a coffee house, will be open during the time of the concert and will feature high-quality coffee and tea as well as baked goods, all for donate-what-you-can-afford prices.

The concerts are open to the public. Local youth from the Sycamore Leadership Program will be working at Sy's Cafe learning workforce trading skills. Almost all the concerts this summer will feature multiple artists.

"Feel free to stop in for 10 minutes or stay the full two hours and see both concerts," commented Bobbyjon Bauman, center director.

Wintersville UMC having its Strawberry Festival Saturday

WINTERSVILLE -- Wintersville United Methodist Church will be holding its annual Strawberry Festival from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday.

It will be held in the Center for Hope at 702 Main St., Wintersville.

This marks the 32nd year for the festival, which will feature a variety of sandwiches, cabbage rolls, salads and strawberry desserts. Patrons can eat in or get carryout.

Ex-detective, undercover cop back for more stories Saturday

WEIRTON -- Highly decorated retired detective and undercover policeman Bill Beatty returns to the Weiron Area Museum and Cultural Center on Saturday at 1 p.m. to expand on stories he shared March 20 during "Volume One of Uniform and Undercover Stories."

The event is open to the public, and admission is free, although donations are appreciated.

"Beatty has had a fascinating life," notes WAMCC Executive Director Savannah Schroll Guz, "and in 'Volume One of his Uniform and Undercover Stories,' he had the audience completely immersed in his accounts of history that so many people experienced themselves and can relate to. Bill adds both fresh insights and humor to these stories," she said.

Four Seasons Seniors meeting includes music and prizes

WEIRTON -- The Four Seasons Seniors held their June meeting at Undo's in Weirton with President Gene Viola presiding.

Tony LaRosa gave the opening prayer followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and singing of "God Bless America."

After dinner members were entertained with songs by Chuck Lucas.

The reports of the secretary and treasurer were read. Members voted on having drawings of donated items at future meetings. Valerie Rowland volunteered to make something for the next meeting.

Pat Beltrame won the 50-50 drawing. Richard Dobbs won the Undo's gift certificate. Other prize winners were Joyce Dobbs, Sandy Corrigan, Carolyn Shaffer, Ron Fallert and Marlene Dunn.

The next meeting will be held July 21 at Undo's.

Finley United Methodist Church schedules VBS for July 5-9

STEUBENVILLE -- Finley United Methodist Church, located at 958 Lincoln Ave., Steubenville, will host Vacation Bible School for children ages 5 through 12 to the theme "Treasured -- Discovering You're Priceless to God."

It will be held from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on July 5-9.

"At 'Treasured VBS,' kids dig into action-packed, faith-filled adventures. They'll discover God's greatest treasure isn't diamonds, gems or gold -- it's them." a spokesperson noted.

Jefferson County Retired Teachers group hears updates

STEUBENVILLE -- The Jefferson County Retired Teachers Association met June 8 at Bell Chapel United Methodist Church on state Route 213 with President Dave Nicholson presiding.

Barbara Losey conducted a memorial service for 10 deceased members. Barbara Pitts passed out an informative quiz about the American flag and presented each member with a flag bookmark.

Nicholson informed members that the Pleasant Hill Old Schoolhouse Museum Christmas cookie and book sale have been canceled for this year. Open houses, however, will be held the second Sunday of each month, June through September from 1-3 p.m. The Fall Fest will be held in late October or early November.

Guest speaker Robin Rayfield, Ohio Retired Teachers Association director, spoke about the State Techers Retirement System audit being conducted. He said STRS is "being dark and not transparent to the retired membership of their investment methods."

The next general meeting will be held Sept. 14 at Wintersville United Methodist Church.

ADK Fidelis Gamma Chapter is presented two awards

WEIRTON -- West Virginia Fidelis Gamma Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa Honorary Teacher's Organization met June 3 at Garden Grill Steakhouse in Weirton.

President Diane Higgins called the meeting to order. Margo Polk read the minutes from the May meeting and a thank-you card from former member Kay Kuzma. Treasurer Carolyn Allison gave the financial report.

Higgins presented the thought for the day, reading "Education" from "Oh Ye Jigs and Julips," a book of essays written by a girl attending an Episcopal boarding school.

Allison shared two awards that were presented to the chapter -- the Violet Award and the Pearl Award certificates for 2020.

June birthdays were acknowledged.

Allison and Ruth Fuller were hostesses for the meeting. The next meeting will be held Aug. 5 at a location to be announced.

'Knights of North Castle' theme for Paris Presbyterian VBS

BURGETTSTOWN -- Paris Presbyterian Church, located at 127 Steubenville Pike, Burgettstown, will be hosting Vacation Bible School on June 28-July 2 from 8:45 a.m. to noon.

The theme is "Knights of North Castle," and it is open to children in preschool through sixth grade. "Children will learn to be strong in the Lord and in the strength of God's power by putting on the armor of God -- truth, justice, peace, faith and salvation," a spokesperson noted. Each day's activities include games, music, crafts, teaching and a snack.

'Majesty' to perform Sunday at Riverview United Methodist

TORONTO -- The singing group "Majesty" will perform during the 9:30 a.m. service at Riverview United Methodist Church in Toronto on Sunday.

The group of singers, including Ashley Plank, Regina Dicken, Brandan Bennett and Rebecca Walter, are from the Penn Bible Institute.

"Their goal is to be an inspiration to the congregation and to the community," a church spokesperson noted. "They are especially interested in seeing young people experience a personal relationship with God and find God's direction in their lives."

Summer open house planned Sunday at Richmond museum

RICHMOND -- The Richmond Community Historical Society continues its summer open houses at the Crew House Museum at 34 W. Main St.

Hosted by the historical society, it will be held from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated. Items of interest include a photo of Adam Stewart, the village's first mayor in 1835, and a cabinet he built.

The summer open houses are held from noon to 4 p.m. on the second and fourth Sunday. Other open house dates are July 11 and 25 and Aug. 8 and 22.

The museum welcomes visitors, including JUHS reunion groups, who can arrange a tour of the popular JUHS memorabilia rooms on the museum's second floor, by contacting Phil Judy, society president, at (740) 765-4534.

Anyone interested in local history is welcome to attend meetings or join the historical society. Annual dues are $5.

The next meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on July 20 at a location to be announced.

Sugar Grove UMC welcomes evangelist, gospel singer

TORONTO -- Evangelist and gospel singer Warren Finney will be at Sugar Grove United Methodist Church on Sunday at 7 p.m.

Wellsburg church offering free takeout dinner on July 1

The Wellsburg Presbyterian Church , located at 901 Charles St., Wellsburg, will host a free takeout dinner on July 1 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.
