EAST SPRINGFIELD -- East Springfield's Memorial Day parade and veterans service on Monday included the presentation of awards.
Sponsored and organized this year by the East Springfield Community Center volunteers, the parade began at the former school building and ended at the community center, where a free covered-dish dinner and hot dogs were served after the ceremony.
Prizes and plaques were awarded in various categories with the prize awards being $40, first place; $30, second; and $20, third, in each of the categories.
Parade winners were:
Floats: first, Church of the Cross; second, Pleasant Hill softball; third, Christ United Methodist Church; and special mention, Purple Circle 4-H and Girl Scouts Troop 31103.
Novelty: first, Ron Stone; second, Carry Out Express; and third, Jeff and Charlene Mence.
Motorized vehicles: First 1950 Ford pickup, Jeff Turnbull; second, John Deere tractor, Rob Alloggia; and third, 1966 2 1/2-ton Keiser, Thomas Diley.
Horses: First, Kathy Beagle; second, Eric Davis; and third, Ron Waggoner.
Antique Car Club: first, 1957 Chevy, Bud Collin; second, Ford pickup, Dave Galladay; and third, 1965 Ford, Joe Darling.
Antique cars: First, Ford pickup, Ron Ramsey; second Mack, Tom Stonebraker; and third, Jeep, Fred Jones.
The Edison High School Marching Band performed. Fire department that had a parade presence were East Springfield, Amsterdam, Bergholz, Richmond and Unionport.
The grand marshal was 90-year-old Ray Fleishour, a Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War. He has been an East Springfield resident for 60 years, has a sharpening business and is an active member of Christ United Methodist Church in East Springfield.
The guest speaker was the Rev. Robert Carson, pastor of East Springfield Church of the Cross.
