Serb Fest returns July 24 at Serbian Picnic Grounds
STEUBENVILLE -- Holy Resurrection Serbian Orthodox Church at 528 N. Fourth St., Steubenville, returns this year with what is the church's key fundraiser of the year.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Serb Fest was canceled last year but returns this year with the festivities happening July 24 from noon to 8 p.m. at the Serbian Picnic Grounds, located at 80 Serbian Drive, Weirton. Gates open at 11:30 a.m.
"We have had numerous calls asking if we are having it this year, so we are excited about bringing it back," a committee spokesperson commented.
Everyone is welcome to attend. Admission is $2 for adults with children under age 12 admitted for free.
"The Serb Fest highlights the food and original recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation. The food and pastries are made by our parishioners," the spokesperson explained. "Specialties are cabbage rolls, cabbage and noodles, pierogies, kielbasa and sauerkraut, sweet sausage and our delicious homemade pastries."
Favorites are the wood-roasted lamb and chicken and the grilled cevaps, which are little sausages made by two of the church's parishioners and the Rev. Rajko Kosic. The sausages are made with lamb, pork, beef and "secret spices."
There will be traditional Serbian music played throughout the day with the live music of Radost.
New this year is a 50/50 drawing -- one at 3 p.m. and the other at 7 p.m. The winner must be present.
Some religious items will be available for purchase.
The first Serbian picnic was held around 1952. "It was a great time for families and friends to reunite and celebrate their Serbian heritage. A few years ago the name was changed to Serb Fest. We wanted the people in the Ohio Valley to know all were invited and not just the parishioners from our church," the spokesperson explained. Not only does the event attract people from the Tri-State Area, but visitors from Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, California, Arizona, Florida and North Carolina.
"Serbs are a proud people. The most important things in their lives are their Orthodox faith, family, friends and food," the spokesperson continued.
"Serb Fest is held at King's Creek in Weirton in a beautiful country setting operated and maintained by the Serbian Men's Club -- a gem of the valley."
There is a basketball court and a playground for the children at the picnic grounds.
