NEW CUMBERLAND -- The city of New Cumberland has begun a military banners program to honor the men and women of their town who have served or are currently serving in all branches of the military.
The one-time cost to purchase a banner for a service man or woman is $125, which includes a 24-inch-by-36-inch, two-sided banner and the necessary hardware to install the banner on a telephone pole somewhere in town.
Interested relatives of veterans and current military are asked to pick up a form and fill it out if they would like to purchase one. The forms can be picked up at the New Cumberland City Building, the Swaney Memorial Library and the New Cumberland VFW.
For anyone who lives out of town and can't pick up a form, one can be mailed by sending a request to City of New Cumberland/Military Banners, P.O. Box 505, New Cumberland, WV 26047.
"The banner is a fitting way to honor all those who have served and to recognize their sacrifice," explained George Hines, program spokesman. On the face of the banner will be the service person's name, rank, years served and any commendations that he or she might have earned. To purchase a banner, a copy of the service person's DD-214 form must be included. "If you don't have one, they are often available from the Hancock County Court House," Hines noted.
