Workshop Saturday on spring
garden bed prep, composting
STEUBENVILLE -- The Urban Mission Backyard Food Garden Center will host a free workshop on preparing spring beds in the fall and an introduction to composting.
It will start at 10 a.m. Saturday at the War Memorial Building at 423 North St., Steubenville, and move ultimately to the site of the garden center, which is across the street from the Urban Mission Ministries warehouse at 311 N. Sixth St., Steubenville.
There is no charge to participate.
Leading the workshop will be Jacob Hyman, garden center manager, who will be joined by local farmers Shawn and Beth Dougherty.
"We'll be using found and recycled materials, yard wastes and whatever is lying around to demonstrate a bunch of ways to start your spring garden beds now in the fall," Hyman explained. "Come learn how to utilize piled organic matter, kitchen wastes, fallen logs, grass clippings, cardboard and shredded papers to construct deep beds that will break down over the winter. These techniques will build soil, free fertility, and feed worms, fungi, and beneficial microbes in your garden," he noted. "Have your spring garden beds prepped ahead of time."
The mission of the recently launched Urban Mission Backyard Food Garden Center is "to create a physical hub for models, materials, mentors and manpower to help grow gardens in the window sills, backyards and empty lots of Steubenville."
