Toronto Sunrise Seniors hear trip report, discuss purchase
TORONTO -- The Toronto Sunrise Seniors met on Aug. 26 at the Karaffa Recreation Center with President Barbara Pritts calling the meeting to order and Mary Edwards giving the blessing for the meal.
Following dinner, members recited the Pledge of Allegiance. Secretary Laura Sheets conducted the roll call of officers and read the minutes of the previous meeting. Treasurer Judy Sabol gave the financial report, and Vice President Gloria Howard announced August birthdays and anniversaries.
The September kitchen committee is Jay Smith, Beth Clarke, Kenny Mossor, Joyce and Tim Gribben, Sandi and Joe Radvansky, Diana Hooper and Tracey Wade.
Pritts reported on the recent trip to Amish country to the Ohio Star Theater. "Everything went well," Pritts noted. "The bus was on time and the driver was extremely helpful. The lunch was delicious, and the show was excellent. Everyone seemed to have a good time."
The bus is filled for the trip to Hartville on Sept. 30, Pritts announced.
The group discussed the purchase of a fire extinguisher for the kitchen but will check with the recreation director before purchasing it.
Nancy Bodrog was recognized as member of the month.
Mary Edwards and Beth Clarke were the winners of the 50-50 drawing. The group said goodbye to longtime members Susan and Bill Kulstad who are moving to Colorado.
Mary Ewards gave the closing benediction and the group played bingo with Joe Radvansky calling the numbers. The winners for the evening were Carolyn McCart, Phyllis Smith, Bonnie Wilson, Mary Lou Deku, Judy Sabol, Susan Kulstad, Nancy Bodrog, Jerry Cornish, Paul Sherwood, Gloria Howard and Marcella McKnight.
Cookies and Cocoa with Santa
scheduled Oct. 8 in Follansbee
FOLLANSBEE -- The third-annual Cookies and Cocoa with Santa will be held Oct. 8 at the Steel Shelter at Follansbee Park, beginning at 7 p.m.
The shelter is near the restrooms.
Admission is $5 per child, and all proceeds benefit Follansbee Christmas in the Park charities.
Activities include "Twas the Night Before Christmas" story with Santa, cookies, cocoa, a craft and Bingo.
Children are invited to wear their pajamas, and each child will receive a special gift from Santa.

Post 33 Auxiliary hosting breakfast, bake sale Sunday
STEUBENVILLE -- The Steubenville American Legion Post 33 Auxiliary will be hosting a breakfast and bake sale Sunday at the post, located at 808 N. Fifth St., Steubenville.
It will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is open to the public. The price is $7, and the menu is scrambled eggs, two sausage patties, home fries and pancakes.
Quinn Memorial AME Church
plans for grand reopening
STEUBENVILLE -- Quinn Memorial AME Church, located at 515 North St., Steubenville, is making plans for the grand reopening celebration of the church, celebrating to the theme: "Show Your Love."
"The congregation is eagerly awaiting the diminishing of the spread of the COVID virus so that we can reopen our church in grand fashion," a church spokesperson explained. "Names of those who have given love gifts for this affair will be posted on the Tree of Love and included in the program at the reopening celebration.
The deadline for inclusion in the program is Sept. 20. Community representatives are welcomed to be part of the program.
Committee members are Patricia Fletcher and Jacqueline Gibson, co-chairs; Eloise Curenton and Lisa Mason, financial; Sylvia Thompson, correspondence; and Terry L. Jennings, publicity.
"Quinn looks forward to the community being a part of our grand reopening celebration," the spokesperson added.
The Rev. Buena Smith Dudley is the church's pastor.
Family movie night Sept. 17
at Sycamore Youth Center
STEUBENVILLE -- Sycamore Youth Center at 301 N. Fourth St., Steubenville, will be hosting a family movie night featuring "The Greatest Showman" on the big screen in the sanctuary.
It will be shown on Sept. 17, beginning at 7 p.m. sharp, and is free and open to all ages. All children under the age of 10 must be accompanied by an adult. Snacks will be available with donations welcome.

Southern gospel concert
Sept. 17 in Carrollton
CARROLLTON -- The Troy Burns Family of Bryson City, N.C., will present a southern gospel concert at the Carrollton Bible Chapel on Sept. 17, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
A love offering will be taken, and two food items are requested for admission. These will be donated to the local food pantry, Loaves and Fishes. Door prizes will be drawn during intermission.
Troy Burns has become well known as one of the founders of the Inspirations in 1964. He sang with the group for more than 30 years, starting at age 13. His wife, Tammy, traveled with Troy and the Inspirations and sang tenor in the group for three years.
Troy and Tammy organized their own group more than seven years ago, known as the Troy Burns Family. They are known for their distinct family harmony and their love for the ministry of Jesus Christ.
During his singing career, Troy has more recorded more than 700 original and charting sons, including "Jesus Is Coming Soon" and "The Wonder of Wonders." The Inspirations appeared regularly on the Gospel Singing Jubilee and in 1974 won the Dove Award for the Best Gospel TV Show.

Spay-neuter clinic on Oct. 9-10 accepting appointments still
STEUBENVILLE -- The Brooke County Animal Welfare League will host the next Roaming Animal Sterilization Clinic at Low Cost on Oct. 9 and 10 at the American Legion Post 33 at the Steubenville American Legion Post 33, located at 808 N. Fifth St.
Any interested pet owners should call (304) 374-4443 as appointments are limited and required. No walk-ins will be accepted.
Appointments are not limited to Brooke County residents.
