WEIRTON -- Witches. Graveyards. Dead souls. That's what the Ohio Valley Cloak & Dagger Co. has on its party menu when the troupe returns to the Weirton Area Museum and Cultural Center stage on Saturday at 7 p.m. for the Halloween-themed "Cloak & Dagger On the Air: Quiet, Please!"
"Quiet, Please! was a horror anthology series from the late 1940s that really played with and stretched the genre in a way that inspires storytellers who rediscover the series today," explained Pete Fernbaugh, creator and executive producer of Cloak & Dagger On the Air. "It was written and directed by one person, Wyllis Cooper, who looked like an accountant or a bookkeeper, but whose imagination was worlds removed from the daily grind. Cooper was able to see the beauty in horror and the horror in beauty and how the two intersected and co-mingled. His stories are surprising and rarely play out the way audiences expect. If this sounds familiar, then yes, there is an unconfirmed, but plausible rumor that Cooper was a major influence on Rod Serling of 'The Twilight Zone.'"
For Saturday's production, Fernbaugh said they've selected three stories themed for the holiday, beginning with "Don't Tell Me About Halloween," in which a man tries to kill a witch who has been haunting him for centuries. The only complication? The witch is his wife.
Then, in "Take Me Out to the Graveyard," a cab driver is baffled as to why so many people ask him to drop them off at cemeteries. Is there something screwy about his cab…or him?
And finally, in "Calling All Souls," a prisoner on death row desperately attempts to connect with the souls of those he has been accused of murdering, for they are his last hope in proving his innocence before his execution on All Souls' Day.
Starring Rob DeSantis, Bethany Fernbaugh, Noah Hilton and Karissa Martin, the performance will be done in the style of live radio drama and will be available to the public in two ways.
First, it will be broadcast free of charge through the Weirton Area Museum & Cultural Center's Facebook page. Viewers will have an opportunity throughout the show to donate to the Museum via PayPal (https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/weirtonareamuseum). All proceeds from the livestream will go to benefit WAMCC.
Second, the performance will be open to an in-person audience. Admission is free, although those attending in-person are asked to consider a donation to help the museum and Cloak & Dagger cover the costs of this production. No reservations are needed, and all current CDC COVID-19 guidelines will be followed. Masks are optional.
WAMCC is located at 3149 Main St., Weirton. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., and the show will begin promptly at 7 p.m.
