Church hosting drive-through turkey dinner on Nov. 4
WEIRTON -- Christ United Methodist Church, located at 3598 Pennsylvania Ave., Weirton, will host its annual turkey dinner on Nov. 4 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
The meal will include turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, cranberry relish, rolls and pumpkin dessert. Meal prices are adults, $10; children 10 and under, $4; and children under 5, free.
This year's the dinner will be drive-through, takeout only. There will be no dine-in options.
Advance orders may be placed by calling the church office at (304) 748-6680. No orders will be taken the day of the dinner.
iServe Day of Community
Service set for Saturday
STEUBENVILLE -- The Sycamore Youth Center is hosting the iServe Day of Community Service on Saturday, a day in which local youth and youth groups will be doing community service for a number of local agencies and the homes of widows and others in need, according to Bobbyjon Bauman, center director.
The projects will include light landscaping, cleaning, organizing and painting. The day runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and a free pizza lunch will be served.
Students and adults are welcome to come to the full event or only part of the time, Bauman explained. Participants should go to the Sycamore Youth Center at 301 N. Fourth St., Steubenville, to receive their work assignment. For details call (740) 409-2986.
ADK Beta Alpha Chapter
welcomes author as speaker
STEUBENVILLE -- The Beta Alpha Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa Teachers Sorority met Tuesday at Malara Hall in Steubenville.
Sue Davidson introduced Susan Guy, local author and retired corrections officer who worked in Belmont County.
Guy showed pictures and discussed her latest book, "Mobsters, Madams, and Murder in Steubenville Ohio: The Story of Little Chicago."
She also discussed another one of her books, "The Moonlight Mill Murders," which told of actual events that occurred at the Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel mill complex during the 1930s. The murders always occurred when there was a full moon, Guy said, and the men who worked at the plants actually carried self-defense items in their lunch pails to fend off the "murderer." These crimes were never solved, according to Guy, who is working on two more books about unsolved murders in this area.
President Linda Lenzi conducted the business meeting where reports from the secretary and treasurer were read and accepted.
Altruistic Chairman Kathy Henry collected volunteer hours from the membership. Scholarship Chairman Sharon Patterson announced that Elizabeth Smith of Toronto High School had been awarded the Beta Alpha Scholarship last spring.
Davidson, ways and means chairman, discussed possible projects with the members. After discussion, it was decided to sell mums next year and to sponsor a spring bus trip. Money was collected for the Urban Mission Ministries.
Seven chapter members will attend the ADK district meeting that will be held Saturday at Froehlich's Classic Corner in Steubenville.
Pamela Fithen, chaplain, noted the challenges members have had during the past year. She led the group in prayer in memory of the 13 soldiers killed in Kabul, Afghanistan.
Hostesses for the evening were Fithen, Sharon Patterson and Teresa Nicholson. The sorority's next scheduled meeting is 6 p.m. on Nov. 9 at Malara Hall. The program will be announced at a later date.
PERI chapter 5 members schedule Wednesday meeting
STEUBENVILLE -- The Jefferson County PERI District 9, Chapter 5, will be meeting at Eat 'n Park, Mall Drive, on Wednesday at 11 a.m.
The speaker will be Jefferson County General Health District Health Commissioner Andrew Henry.
