schedules virtual meeting
NEW CUMBERLAND -- The WVU Extension Service, Hancock County office will conduct an Extension Service Committee meeting on Tuesday, beginning at 6 p.m. through a virtual format.

Paris Presbyterian Church plans trunk-or-treat Sunday
BURGETTSTOWN -- Paris Presbyterian Church 127 Steubenville Pike, Burgettstown, will be hosting a Trunk-or-Treat on Sunday from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Children of all ages are invited to come and receive treats from trunks set up in the church parking lot. The church will provide a pumpkin and decorating kit to each child.
Members of the community are invited to decorate their cars and hand out treats. The best decorated trunk will be awarded a $50 DeeJay's gift card.
"To reserve a space for your car, contact the church office at (724) 729-3450 or just come on Sunday to set up before the event," a church spokesperson noted.
Toronto Seniors meeting
includes 'Show and Tell' theme
TORONTO -- "Show and Tell" was the theme of the Oct. 21 meeting of the Toronto Seniors.
Members were asked to bring in any special handmade items which resulted in "many beautiful quilts, blankets, paintings and crafts" being on display. "We have many talented members who enjoyed bringing them for all to see," a club spokesperson noted.
Judy Bickler extended the welcome to those attending. A brief blessing and the Pledge of Allegiance followed. The treasurer report was given and approved. Revised bylaws were approved.
Canned goods and nonperishables were collected for the food-pantry in Toronto. The club will continue the collection at the Nov. 18 meeting.
A special thanks was extended to Mayor John Parker for letting the group use the Karaffa Recreational Center for its meetings. "The commons area is a beautiful setting," Bickler noted.
The final trip of the year will be to Columbiana Best Western Dinner Theater on Nov. 21 and include a dinner and the music of Nick Costo and his 11-piece band. Departure time will be 10:15 a.m. from 300 Meyer St.
Bingo and door prize winners were John Sims, Iris Craig, Pat Pfabe, Linda Livingstone, Jean Cline, Karen Steigerwald, Mary Scott, Joyce Keenan, Ken Woodward, Mary Kay Petras and Barb Lyons.
The kitchen committee for November is Joyce and Richard Dobbs, Marlene Dunn, Carole Eddy, Bonita Emery and Tony and Dorothy Farrister.
New Cumberland Garden Club is sponsoring wreath event
NEW CUMBERLAND -- The New Cumberland Garden Club will once again be sponsoring the Wreaths Across America event for the New Cumberland Cemetery.
This year's event will be held Dec. 18.
Initiated more thanr 25 years ago by Merrell Worcester of Maine, the event has grown bigger each year. Worcester didn't want to waste any of the pine trimmings left over from his tree farm, so he decided to put them to good use by making them into wreaths. The first wreaths were donated to Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C. Now wreaths are placed every December on thousands of veterans' graves across America and beyond.
"All of our veterans, past and present, have given their service to protect our freedoms, and this is just one way to honor their contributions," a news release notes. The motto of Wreaths Across America is "Honor, Remember, Teach." "The motto reminds us to honor and remember the veterans who have served and to teach people, especially young people, about what service to country is all about."
Every year in December, volunteers in all 50 states show up at cemeteries for the solemn task of laying a fresh pine wreath on the graves of as many service men and women as possible.
Last year, volunteers at the New Cumberland Cemetery placed 290 wreaths on veterans' graves. "The garden club's goal this year is to surpass that number so that more of the roughly 450 servicemen's graves at the cemetery will be decorated," explained George Hines, club president. So far this year, the garden club has received donations for 203 wreaths.
"If you would like to donate funds to purchase a wreath, the cost is $15, and the last day to purchase this year is Nov. 30," Hines noted. For those who are interested in sponsoring a wreath for a specific veteran's grave, that can be noted on the order form.

Mount Carmel Women's
Ministry retreat detailed
STEUBENVILLE -- Members of the EmpowHER Women's Ministry of Mount Carmel Community Baptist Church, located at 708 N. Fifth St., Steubenville, met Oct. 17 immediately following the morning worship service to finalize plans for their annual women's retreat.
The "Concerts of Prayer Service: Empowerment through Prayer and Praise" will be held Nov. 5-6 at the church.
There will be prayer and praise presentations by Tammy Gregory and Michelle Burton on Nov. 5, beginning at 6 p.m. with musical selections provided by Wayne and Cynthia Lytle. On Nov. 6 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the featured guest speaker will be Evangelist Diane B. Neely from Pittsburgh with musical selections from the Sycamore Youth Choir.
The theme this year is "Gathering to Refresh, Renew and Recharge" with the scripture reference from II Corinthians 5:17.
Members of the EmpowHER Women's Ministry are Sophie Spencer, Jean Isler, Tammy Gregory, Michelle Burton, Patti West, Scherry Montgomery, Mary Jane Harris, Joyce McGhee and Sandi Rue.
A free will offering will be accepted. Refreshments will be served, and the public is invited to attend "this spirit-filled retreat."
