Three Score Seniors mark
Halloween with costumes
WEIRTON -- The October meeting of the Three Scores Seniors group was called to order by Vice President Mary Ellen Groves with Bob Shirer giving the invocation.
Groves complimented members on the variety of Halloween costumes worn. The "Senior Chippendales" performed a dance to entertain.
Following dinner, Bertha and the Bells, a group from Pittsburgh, provided entertainment. November will feature Ron Retzer.
Secretary Barbara Purks gave the September minutes, and Treasurer George Pohlman provided the treasury report along with reading "Getting Older."
Sunshine Chair Winnie Kemp updated members on cards sent and acknowledged a birthday.
Brenda Edwards, membership chair, reported 80 members with Barb Jenelle joining that evening. Envelopes will be provided the next two months on tables for dues. Dues are payable by the end of 2021.
Reservation Chair Vivian Weigel noted there were 63 members in attendance. The November and December meetings will be held a week earlier because of the holidays. The next meeting is Nov. 18.
Members were informed that the Hancock County Historical Museum would be presenting a Halloween-themed presentation on Oct. 31. Bob Watson announced the Summit Art Gallery will feature an art display of student works beginning Nov. 6.
Historian Lee Edwards had updated albums on display.
Dolores Ginier, chair of the nominating committee, introduced the committee's slate. With Ginier are Bob and Lea Shirer, Josi Elliott, Tony LaRosa and Angela Mazur.
Nominations will be accepted from the floor in November with new officers installed at the December meeting.
Jim Hare and Lee Edwards presented prizes to Jim Pryor, Brenda Edwards, Winnie Kemp and Aggie Lellie. The 50-50 given by Lee Edwards and Larry Purks went to Dolores Ginier and Aggie Lellie. Betty Virtue and Brenda Edwards gave dinners to George Pohlman and Barb Libengood.
Bob Shirer gave the benediction.
Large yard sale Saturday at
community center in Unionport
UNIONPORT -- The Wayne Township Community Center in Unionport will be the site of a large indoor yard sale on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Lunch will be available.
Proceeds benefit the upkeep of the community center.
Weir High Class of 1970 to meet Wednesday evening
WEIRTON -- Members of the Weir High Class of 1970 will hold their monthly dinner meeting on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Gee's Pub. All classmates and spouses are invited to attend.
Civil War lecture Saturday
at W.Va. Independence Hall
WHEELING -- The Ohio Valley Civil War Roundtable and West Virginia Independence Hall will host Civil War author Kelly Mezurek on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. The event is free and open to the public.
Mezeruk will review her book "For Their Own Cause: The 27th United States Color Troops," which focuses on the second of two colored regiments raised in Ohio. The presentation will take place in the WVIH courtroom.
Mezurek earned a bachelor of arts degree from Baldwin Wallace and her master's degree and Ph.D. from Kent State University. As an instructor she serves in Walsh University's humanities division and as a content reviewer for the National Veterans Memorial Museum in Columbus. Mezurek was awarded the 2019 Nau Civil War Fellowship at the University of Virginia and was a finalist for the Ohioana Book award for nonfiction.
As a historian and writer, Mezurek has as her focus researching African Americans who participated n the Civil War. Her work has been featured in numerous national publications and media.

Follansbee, Brooke Library
locations offer Geri-Fit classes
WELLSBURG -- The Brooke County Public Library is offering Geri-Fit, a 45-minute strength training class for older adults.
Participants start lifting light weights, usually while seated and can work at their own pace. They should bring a set of 2- or 3-pound dumbbells, a stretch band and water to drink.
The video fitness classes are held from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays at the Follansbee Library, 844 Main St., and from 8:30 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. Tuesdays and Fridays at the Brooke County Library, 945 Main St. Advance registration is required by calling (304) 737-1551.
Museum visits can be arranged
WELLSBURG -- The Brooke County Museum and Cultural Center has closed for winter, but visits may be arranged by calling (304) 794-6584 at least a few days in advance.
Located at 704 Charles St., the museum includes a variety of displays reflecting the daily life of Brooke County residents during more than 100 years and the military service of many in various military conflicts.
