Drop-off sites set to open
Nov. 15-22 for Operation Christmas Child shoebox gifts
STEUBENVILLE -- More than 4,000 locations will open to collect Operation Christmas Child shoebox gifts nationwide for the Samaritan's Purse project with volunteers preparing to collect shoebox gifts during National Collection Week, Nov. 15-22, offering a curbside option.
Operation Christmas Child has been collecting and delivering shoebox gifts -- filled with school supplies, hygiene items and fun toys -- to children worldwide since 1993. This is a project that everyone can still be a part of even with COVID-19 restrictions, according to a news release regarding the annual outreach.
Individuals, families and groups still have time to transform empty shoeboxes into fun gifts. The project partners with local churches across the globe to deliver these tangible expressions of God's love to children in need.
"In the midst of the pandemic, children around the world need to know that God loves them and there is hope," said Franklin Graham, president of Samaritan's Purse. "A simple shoebox gift opens the door to share about the true hope that can only be found in Jesus Christ."
Participants can find the nearest drop-off location and hours of operation as they make plans to drop off their shoebox gifts. The online lookup tool is searchable by city or ZIP code. For information, visit Christmas Child Shoebox at samaritanspurse.org.
There are local drop-offs in Jefferson, Harrison, Brooke and Hancock counties. Locations include: Wintersville United Methodist Church, 702 Main St., Wintersville; Sycamore Tree Ministries, 2854 Eldersville road, Follansbee; New Cumberland Church of the Nazarene, 49 Mazarene Lane, New Cumberland; Brooke Hills Free Methodist Church, 1340 Washington Pike, Wellsburg; and Scott Memorial United Methodist Church, 817 E. Market St., Cadiz.

Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan's Purse, seeks to demonstrate God's love in a tangible way to children in need around the world and, together with the local church worldwide, to share the Good News of Jesus Christ. Since 1993, Operation Christmas Child has collected and delivered more than 188 million gift-filled shoeboxes to children in more than 160 countries and territories.
Follansbee Legion Auxiliary collecting for Honor Flight
FOLLANSBEE -- The Follansbee American Legion Post 45 Auxiliary hopes to raise $300 to sponsor a veteran's participation in the Honor Flight program.
The program provides flights to veterans monuments in Washington to veterans of World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars and terminally ill veterans of any era. Each group of veterans also is honored upon their return to Clarksburg, W.Va.
The donations may be sent to ALA 45, P.O. Box 31, Follansbee, WV 26037.
Orders being accepted for
cabbage rolls and pierogies
WEIRTON -- A frozen, uncooked cabbage roll and cheese/potato pierogi sale sponsored by members of St. Nicholas Orthodox Church is under way and will extend through December while supplies last.
The cost for six cabbage rolls is $20, and the cost is $9 for a dozen pierogies. Call (304) 479-0196 to place orders.
Pick-up dates will be Nov. 19, Dec. 3 and Dec. 17 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. or 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church Hall, 604 Colliers Way, across from Weirton Medical Center.
Toronto church is hosting
community blood drive Nov. 24
TORONTO -- Crossroads -- North River Campus is hosting a community blood drive with the American Red Cross on Nov. 24 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the sanctuary at 207 N. River Ave. in Toronto.

Fundraiser quarter auction
set for Saturday in Stratton
STRATTON -- A fundraiser vendor quarter auction to benefit a local child with a rare genetic disorder will be held Saturday at the Stratton Municipal Building, located at 136 Second Ave.
Doors open at 1 p.m., and the auction begins at 2 p.m. Admission is $5 for the first paddle with $2 for each additional paddle. Soups and snacks will be available for purchase.
Gabriel Reese is the 4-year-old son of Nic and Autumn Reese of Toronto who has MPS type II, Hunter Syndrome, which is often referred to as children's Alzheimer's, explained organizer Judy Fellows. It is an extremely rare genetic disorder affecting approximately one in 170,000 boys.
Gabriel's body, Fellows continued, is missing an enzyme that is needed to break down complex sugars, which leads to build-up in every cell of his body. Children are often delayed in infancy and toddlerhood, but eventually lose all of their skills -- the ability to talk, walk, eat and more. Life expectancy is 12 to 15 years. There is no cure.
