'Nature' theme for October
camera club competition
WINTERSVILLE -- The Upper Ohio Valley Camera Club has announced the October competition winners to the theme "Nature."
The theme category winners were: First place, John Hanish; second place, Michelle Stevens; and third place, Wes Penn. The open category winners were: First place, Andy Tindor; second place, Sam Rees, and third place, Wes Penn. The special effects category winners were: First place, Sam Rees; second place, Deb Snider; and third place, Diane Bannister.
The Upper Ohio Valley Camera Club welcomes anyone who has an interest in photography. The next meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Two Ridges Presbyterian Church, 1085 Canton Road, Wintersville. Brooke County Salvation Army
is recruiting some bell ringers
The Brooke County Salvation Army seeks volunteers to serve as bell ringers in its Christmas kettle campaign, which will begin Nov. 26.
Volunteers are needed for various hours to man kettles at the Wellsburg Kroger and Dollar General Market and Follansbee Riesbeck's. For information, call (304) 737-0071.
Soup, sandwich sale orders
accepted starting Monday
WEIRTON -- St. Thomas Episcopal Church on Three Spring Drive will hold a holiday soup and sandwich sale, for take-out only, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 20.
Available for $3 per cup or $8 per quart, the soups will include bean and ham, wedding and potato. Sandwiches are $4 each and include sloppy joes, barbecued ham and plain ham.
The church will be selling slices of apple or pumpkin pie for $3 each, a whole apple pie for $12 and a whole pumpkin pie for $8. There also will beverages and a variety of baked goods for sale.
Those wishing to place an advance order should call (304) 723-4120 and leave their name and number. Orders will be accepted beginning Monday.
Library to screen action film 'Jungle Cruise' on Nov. 19
WELLSBURG -- The Brooke County Public Library will show the PG-13 rated Disney action film, "Jungle Cruise," at noon Nov. 19.

West Virginia Family Reading Week to be marked Nov. 14-20
The Brooke County Public Library and its Follansbee branch is promoting West Virginia Family Reading Week, Nov. 14-20.
Library Director Alex Schneider noted reading helps to stimulate speech and language development in small children and has supported academic success for older ones while reading together can be a great family bonding experience.

FRN offices and food pantry
to close for the holidays
WEIRTON -- The Brooke Hancock Family Resource Network and its food pantry at 1300 Potomac Ave. will be closed on Nov. 25 and 26 and Dec. 24-31 for the holidays. It will reopen on Jan. 3. In addition to nonperishable food, the pantry offers personal hygiene products, cleaning supplies and products for babies and young children.
