sponsorship deadline Nov. 29
for Steubenville, Wintersville
STEUBENVILLE -- The deadline is fast approaching to sponsor a wreath for a veteran's grave as part of the national nonprofit Wreaths Across America program.
Fort Steuben Burial Estates and Two Ridges Cemetery in Wintersville and Mount Calvary Cemetery and Union Cemetery in Steubenville are uniting in their effort to support the mission to "Remember, Honor, Teach," as official locations for 2021.
The local volunteer location coordinators of these four cemeteries, Wendy Barr and Holly Lewis, are joining together this year to have a combined ceremony at Harding Stadium in Steubenville on WAA Day, which is Dec. 18 at noon. Gates will open at 11:30 a.m. with the call to order at 11:55 a.m.
The wreath laying will still take place at each cemetery immediately following the ceremony.
The four cemeteries are among 2,700 other participating locations nationwide, according to Wendy Barr, a local coordinator who offered some statistics on how many veterans' graves there are in these four local cemeteries and how many wreaths have been sponsored so far.
There are more than 2,300 veterans' graves at Fort Steuben Burial Estates, more than 2,300 at Mount Calvary Cemetery, more than 2,500 veterans' graves at Union Cemetery and 25 veterans laid to rest at Two Ridges Cemetery, with those wreaths being sponsored by the Stevens-Christian Memorial American Legion Post No. 557.
A veteran's wreath is "a symbol of honor, respect and victory, a personal gift to an American hero," according to Barr, who noted that since 2018, the Weirton-based Tri-State Young Marines raises funds throughout each year to sponsor wreaths. "The Young Marines' ultimate goal is to be sure that all the fallen service members laid to rest at the cemeteries receive this gift on WAA Day each year.
Anyone can sponsor a wreath for $15. Go to www.wreathsacrossamerica.org/OH0155P. Another option is to make a check or money order payable to Wreaths Across America and mail it to Tri-State Young Marines, P.O. Box 2502, Weirton, WV 26062." the deadline is Nov. 29. Any money received after that date will apply toward wreaths for 2022.

Dixon Healthcare, the Laurels detail effort to Stuff the Bus
STEUBENVILLE -- Dixon Healthcare in Wintersville and the Laurels of Steubenville have challenged each facility in a friendly competition to see who can collect the most items, an effort that welcomes area residents to donate and support both facilities.
The collection continues through Nov. 29 with all items received to Stuff the Bus on Nov. 30, the National Day of Caring.
The focus of Stuff the Bus is family engagement, according to a promotional flier, with the goal to create Christmas memories for all students and their families.
A list of family gift ideas includes Christmas movies, baking goods and items, Christmas aprons, make-your-own quilts, Christmas trains, gingerbread kits, candy canes, themed table settings, family games, crafts, fuzzy print socks, interactive Christmas touch games, coloring books, hot chocolate mugs, fuzzy blankets, Steubenville Big Red gear, toys, puzzles, Play-doh, Christmas pajamas, personal hygiene items and stocking stuffers.

Steubenville schools retirees continue Christmas collection
STEUBENVILLE -- Steubenville City Schools retirees met at Margaret's Cafe in Toronto for lunch on Nov. 11.
Lloyd Wells talked about what retirees have lost from not receiving their Cost-of-Living Adjustment.
Christmas cards were signed for absent members. The collection is continuing for the group's Christmas charity for adults. Contributions should be sent soon to Becky Bryan or Linda Holub. Collecting will be done at the Dec. 9 lunch at Dee Jay's in Weirton.
There will be a gift exchange for anyone who would like to participate by bringing a gift valued at $10 to $15.
Antonio Meucci Lodge is
collecting for Toys for Tots
WEIRTON -- The Antonio Meucci Lodge, Sons and Daughters of Italy, met Nov. 9 at Undo's in Weirton. Vice President Tony LaRosa read the invocation and reminded members about the meaning of Veterans Day on the 11th day of the 11th month at the 11th hour. He read a poem depicting this day.
Veteran Gabriel Arlia led the Pledge of Allegiance. All members joined in singing "God Bless America."
A sit-dinner followed by dessert was enjoyed by club members.
The roll call was taken and minutes were approved as read by Secretary Rita Orler. Norma Henson gave the treasurer's report. which was approved and filed for audit.
LaRosa led the business meeting. He reminded members to pay their dues, attend the Christmas party on Dec. 14 and bring an unwrapped toy for the Toys for Tots campaign. He thanked Arlia for presenting a memorial wreath at the Millsop Community Center Veterans Day service. The wreath was made and donated by Regina Truax.
Members with Novembers birthdays and anniversaries were acknowledged. Get well cards and sympathy cards were sent to members.
Various bus tours were announced, including: Dec. 3, Motown Christmas Show, Capital Theater, Wheeling; Dec. 8, Rivers Casino, Pittsburgh; Feb. 6, "Pretty Woman," Benedum Center, Pittsburgh; March 12, "Swing," Lincoln Park Performing Art Center, Midland, Pa.; March 13, "Hamilton," Benedum Center, Pittsburgh; and June 19, "Carousel," Lincoln Park Performing Art Center, Midland, Pa.

The Undo's gift certificates were won by Lynn Wright and Bobby Arlia. Norma Henson won the 50-50 drawing. Bingo winners were Bobby Arlia, Terry Mamuel, Harry Logan, Dorothy Byers, Angie Mazur, Leonard Ginier and Laura Mamuel.
