Toronto Sunrise Seniors
celebrate Thanksgiving
TORONTO -- The Nov. 12 meeting of the Toronto Sunrise Seniors was a celebration of Thanksgiving.
Members were welcomed to the Karaffa Recreation Center by President Barbara Pritts. Chaplain Mary Edwards gave the blessing for the Thanksgiving feast of turkey and side dishes. The kitchen committee members were thanked for their service and for the Thanksgiving-themed table decorations.
Secretary Laura Sheets conducted the roll call of officers and read the minutes of the previous meeting. Treasurer Judy Sabol gave the financial report, and Social Secretary Marlene Garrett announced November birthdays and that the December kitchen committee will include Ruth White, Marion Wilson, Phyllis Smith, Lucy Timko, Caroline McCart, Carol Rogers and Betty Pierce.
The Dec. 10 meeting will be held in the commons area and will be a catered Christmas dinner. The health report revealed two members in need of cards and prayers. Members were encouraged to take home their pictures from Halloween.
Pritts reminded everyone signed up for the trip to Phipps Conservatory that the bus would leave the stadium parking lot at 1:30 p.m. on Dec. 2.
Dorothy Pavelka was recognized as member of the month. She shared memories of a trip to Alaska and said she would like to attend art school. Members then participated in a Thanksgiving trivia game which included historical facts as well as current traditions.
Pritts and Frank Marino won the 50-50 drawing. Members played bingo after the meeting. Winners for the evening included Shirley Wilson, Debbie Luvisi, Marlene Garrett, Jay Smith, Pritts, Frank Marino, Sandi Radvansky, Helen Lindsay, Lucy Timko, Bill Black and Peg Nordenger.
New members are always welcomed.
Steubenville Lions Club plans OSU-Michigan tailgate party
STEUBENVILLE -- The Steubenville Lions Club is planning its 26th-annual tailgate party for the Ohio State-Michigan game on Saturday at Froehlich's Classic Corner, Steubenville.
The donation is $60 with proceeds to benefit Lions charities. Tickets are available from any Lions club member or at Froehlich's.
Only 200 tickets are printed, and tickets include drawing for cash prizes, large screen TV viewing and food and beverages for two.
The reverse drawing includes: First number drawn, $100; every 25th number drawn, $50; fourth number from last drawn, $50; third number from last drawn, $100; second number from last drawn, $150; next to last number drawn, $200; and last number drawn, $2,500. The winner need not be present.
This year's corporate sponsors are Muxie, Tri-State Financial, Franciscan University of Steubenville and Trinity Health System.
Craft/vendor show Saturday at community center in Unionport
UNIONPORT -- There will be a craft/vendor show at the Wayne Township Community Center in Unionport on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The event will feature crafts, vendors and a Chinese auction.
Food will be available for purchase with proceeds from that benefiting the center.
'Honor Our Heroes' service
Sunday at Shiloh Apostolic
WEIRTON -- Bethlehem Apostolic Temple, 330 N. Main St., Wheeling, and Shiloh Apostolic Faith Assembly, 3000 Weir Ave., Weirton, will observe an "Honor Our Heroes" service on Sunday.
The Wheeling service begins at 10:30 a.m., and the Weirton service at 12:30 p.m.
Dec. 4 quarter auction
at East Springfield VFD
EAST SPRINGFIELD -- The East Springfield Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary will be hosting a fundraiser quarter auction at the fire department, located at 9854 county Road 39, Bloomingdale.
It will be held Dec. 4 with doors opening at 11:30 p.m. and the auction beginning at 12:30 p.m.
A $5 entry fee includes one paddle. Additional paddles will be available for $1 each.
There will be food available for purchase.

Dec. 1 to feature Ron Retzer
FOLLANSBEE -- Through the Follansbee Chamber of Commerce, Puskarich Accounting is presenting a free Christmas concert featuring the Ron Retzer Trio at 6 p.m. Dec. 1.

Funseekers donate to Salvation Army, learn about academy
STEUBENVILLE -- The Nov. 3 meeting of Funseekers was opened with Joann Bugin offering the blessing, a brief remembrance for Veterans Day, the Pledge of Allegiance and the singing of "God Bless America."
A Thanksgiving-style dinner was served to 53 members and guests attending the meeting at Scaffidi's Restaurant and Tavern in Steubenville.
Vice President Kathy DiBenedetto conducted the meeting and cards sent and to be signed. She introduced new Funseeker members Eleanor Kopa and Mary Ann Hoobler.
The secretary's and treasurer's reports were read and approved.
DiBenedetto introduced guest speaker Iris Craig from the Academy of Lifelong Learning who presented an overview of the academy, its history and goals. Members were given the opportunity to register to receive newsletters from it. Following her presentation, Craig joined and became a member of Funseekers.
DiBenedetto thanked members for their support of the food drive to benefit the Salvation Army of Steubenville. Following the meeting, Treasurer Charlotte Christian was to deliver the donations of nearly 100 nonperishable goods along with a cash donation.
John Balzano reported he will have the Super Bowl Squares at the December meeting since there is no meeting in January. The Super Bowl is on Feb. 13.
The Weirton-based Tri-State Marines are participating in the annual Toy for Tots collection. Tabatha Herchuck, Toys for Tots coordinator, will arrange for representatives of the Marines to attend the December meeting and accept the donations from Funseekers. Toys will be distributed in Brooke, Hancock and Jefferson counties.
Members are asked to donate new, unwrapped toys suitable for children ages 6 months to 10 years old.
A brief tour report submitted by Regina Truax noted the Oglebay Festival of Lights trip on Dec. 2 has been canceled. Truax be contacting those who had made reservations. A new trip to the Capitol Theater in Wheeling to see the holiday DopWop show was scheduled for Dec. 3. Details will be presented at the Dec. 1 meeting. Fliers for 2022 trips will be available at the meeting.
Charlie Green and Judy Bickler were the 50/25/25 winners.
Door prizes of assorted gift cards were provided by Joann Llewelltyn to winners Kathy Cole, Ray Dalfonso, Gene Viola, Maggie Icuss, Charlotte Christian, Chuck Bugin, George Williams, John Balzano, Joann Mulrooney and Jeannette Panebianco.
The next meeting is the Christmas dinner meeting on Dec. 1 at Undo's in Weirton with dinner at 6 p.m. with entertainment and a Toys for Tots collection with special guests. Callers will be calling for reservations.
Franciscan chorale to
perform cantata Dec. 2
STEUBENVILLE --The "How Far Is It to Bethlehem?" cantata will be presented by the Franciscan University of Steubenville Chorale on Dec. 2 at 7:30 p.m. in the Tony and Nina Gentile Gallery in the J.C. Williams Center.
The 10-voice choir will be accompanied by piano and flute as members perform Christmas songs from a variety of cultures and eras that trace the journey of the holy family to Bethlehem.
The chorale is under the direction of music professor George Melhorn. The concert is free and open to the public.
Breakfast, Santa visit happen Saturday at Weirton VFW
WEIRTON -- The Weirton VFW Post 2716, located at 3435 Main St., Weirton, is hosting a special Saturday event.
It will offer a breakfast with pancakes, eggs, sausage, coffee and juice from 8 a.m. to noon for $7.
There will be a flea market featuring 25 tables from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. From 9 a.m. to noon, "come see Santa and get a treat bag."
Those attending are encouraged to bring a toy for Toys for Tots.
Follansbee United Methodist
to host advent bazaar Dec. 4
FOLLANSBEE -- Follansbee United Methodist Church, located at 1002 Virginia Ave., will be hosting an advent bazaar on Dec. 4 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
It will feature crafts, treasures, soup and a bake sale.
