STEUBENVILLE -- Steubenville High School's NIKE Club, an all women's organization designed to form a preparation process for students covering topics such as college, various interests and ways to benefit their community, is involved in a variety of volunteer events throughout the year.
That includes ringing bells for the Salvation Army of Steubenville's annual kettle campaign.
"NIKE is a great way for female students to become comfortable with their abilities, strengthen oral and written skills, learn how to network and to obtain a better idea of what all opportunities await come graduation with the help of mentors," explained Katrina Morrow, club adviser.
The club holds monthly meetings and attends workshops that focus on budgeting, expertness, applications for jobs and resume writing. Every member must attend the meetings, which are held on the last Wednesday of every month. Club Leaders are Amya Livingston, president; Mya Stackhouse, vice president; Kirsten DiMarzio, secretary; and Elexis Martin, treasurer.
Aside from involvement in the kettle campaign, club members attend various volunteering events and host fundraisers throughout the year. They host two American Red Cross blood drives in the Steubenville High School gym during the fall and spring and help Urban Mission Ministries with the Thanksgiving dinner distribution.
The club's two annual fundraisers are a Halloween "boo bag" candy sale with proceeds benefiting Urban Mission, and a Valentine's candy sale, with the money going toward the Nike Club scholarship.
One senior member is awarded the scholarship.
