WINTERSVILLE -- The Meridian Green Apartments served as host for a 100th birthday celebration for resident Josephine Viltro Wszeborowski on Thursday.
Born in Wintersville on Jan. 13, 1922, Wszeborowski is the daughter of late John and Isabella LaCamera Viltro, who immigrated to the United States from Italy. Her siblings included sisters Mildred Veltri, Jenny Puzzole and Lucy Siegel and three brothers, Sam, Albert and Frank Viltro, all of whom are deceased.
Her father worked on the railroad, and the family lived on Fernwood Road in Wintersville.
She graduated from Wintersville High School and raised two sons, the late Kenneth Hammer Jr. and Joe Hammer of Scottsdale, Ariz.
Her family includes a granddaughter, Mary Jo "M.J." Bowers of Indiana; a great-grandson, Chris Gooderl of Indiana; and a great-great-granddaughter, Kinsey Jo Gooderl, also of Indiana.
As a single mother of two active boys, Wszeborowski worked all of her life. She attended to customers' needs at Kessler's Farm Fresh Meat Market, which was located on state Route 43 next to what used to be West End Motors; managed the Wintersville License Bureau when it was located in the former Kuester Implement building next to the Center of Music and Art on Main Street, Wintersville; and was an active real estate agent with a number of local Realtors. Before her retirement, she worked at the state liquor store when it was located in the Hollywood Shopping Plaza in Steubenville.
When discussing her birthday, she jokingly responded, "If I knew I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself!"
Wszeborowski "has indeed taken good care of herself as she is in good health, enjoying an occasional bingo game, puzzle books and her morning coffee and toast," a family member noted.
WMC Auxiliary plans uniform sale for Wednesday, Thursday
WEIRTON -- The Weirton Medical Center Auxiliary will hold a Robert's Medical Uniforms sale.
It will be held in the atrium lobby of Weirton Medical Center from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday and from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday. Face masks are required.
Toronto Seniors cancel May trip to Holland Tulip Festival

Financial education program offered every Wednesday
WEIRTON -- CHANGE Inc., in partnership with Chase Bank, is offering a free lunch-to-learn virtual series of one-hour topics on financial literacy.
The financial education program is designed to help enhance participants' financial skills and create positive banking relationships. The free workshop is made up of weekly modules to promote understanding of how the financial system works, how to use it to meet needs and how to be more fiscally responsible.
The weekly Wednesday programs are Zoom meetings that run from noon to 1 p.m. and continue weekly through Feb. 16. Registration and sign-in begins each week at 11:30 a.m.
"So grab your lunch, sit down with your PC, tablet or phone and join in on Wednesdays at 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Eastern Standard Time," a spokesperson noted. Wednesday's topic will be "Loan to Own or Building a Financial Future." Go to zoom.com and use meeting number 961 6406 7061.
Future topics are: "Money Matters," Jan. 26; "Pay Yourself First," Feb. 2; "To Your Credit," Feb. 9; and "Your Own Home," Feb. 16.
