Quinn plans Valentine's
celebration, observance
of Black History Month
STEUBENVILLE -- Quinn Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Church is virtually observing Black History Month on Feb. 6, 13, 20 and 27.
Quinn has invited four community and youth leaders to speak during the church's Sunday morning worship experience, according to the Rev. Buena Smith Dudley, the church's pastor.
They are Steubenville City Council representatives Asantewa Anyabwile, 1st Ward, and 4th Ward Councilman Royal Mayo; NAACP President Mike McIntyre and members of the Youth Council; Rose Slaughter, district president of the National Council of Negro Women; and Carol Ann Simmons, Steubenville president of the National Action Network, led by the Rev. Al Sharpton.
On Feb. 13, Terry Jennings will lead the church in celebration of the birthday of Bishop Richard Allen, the founder of African Methodism.
The theme for Black History Month is "This Is Us." The February Celebration Committee consist of Patricia Fletcher, Eloise Curenton, Terry Jennings and Jacqueline Gibson.
Speakers will share their reflections on the topics "How Has the History of Black People Impacted Your Life and Community?" and "Where Do We Go From Here?"
During February, the church will have a "Virtual Valentine's Day Extravaganza" on Feb. 12. African American cuisine will be served, and dinners can be picked up at the church located at 515 North St., Steubenville, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Gift bags with desserts and other treats also will be given. From 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., Quinn will host a Virtual Valentines Celebration entitled "The Hour of Love," featuring music, poetry and speakers, all about love.
"February promises to be an exciting and busy month of celebration of our journey to now, our path going forward, and the love that conquers anything," Dudley noted.

Find some 'literary love'
in 'Blind Date with a Book'
STEUBENVILLE -- Find your next "literary love" through the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County's annual Blind Date with a Book.
That happens Feb. 7-14, occasion for patrons to stop at the checkout desk during a visit to their library branch and ask for a Blind Date with a Book.
"We'll give you a book, but you won't know the title until after it's checked out," explained Jennifer Cesta, the library system's public relations coordinator.

Adults: A long-term care planning program will be held Feb. 15 at 6 p.m. Gene Zrinyi, financial adviser, and Attorney Edward Littlejohn will discuss what long-term care is, why it is needed and how to financially prepare for it. Register to attend by calling the library.
Cozy Mystery Book Club will meet Feb. 11 at 2 p.m. to discuss "Death of a Gossip" by M.C. Beaton. Call to join.
Paul Goebbel will present "The Lincoln Inaugural Train" on Feb. 19 at 1 p.m. Call to register. Goebbel will share the story of Lincoln's election and his journey to Washington on the railroad. The trip allowed the president-elect to meet the people that he was going to lead in what was a divided nation. "This presentation is done in period dress of a newspaper correspondent and in first person as if the correspondent actually was an eyewitness and reported on the trip for his paper, the New York Herald," Cesta said.
