Library offers special way
to mark Dr. Seuss' birthday
STEUBENVILLE -- The Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County's main library will offer a special way for children to mark the birthday of Dr. Seuss.
Children can walk through the library's life-sized Truffula Tree Forest on March 2-9. The first 30 children to visit the library will receive a free Dr. Seuss book.
Children also can enjoy Dr. Seuss stories and making a craft on March 2 at 4 p.m., but need to register in advance by calling the Main Library at (740) 282-9782.

Adults: Find out the five basic documents that everyone 18 and older should have in place. On March 1 at 5 p.m., Mary Beth Panepucci of Jarvis Law Office will discuss what a will is and what it really does for you, general durable power of attorney, and health care directives. Seating is limited. Register in advance.
Children: Did you know that knowledge of alphabet letters at entry into kindergarten is a strong predictor of reading ability in the 10th grade? Play and Learn the Alphabet is a program for caregiver and children ages 2-6 to attend to play with toys, games and art activities that promote letter knowledge. It is scheduled for March 3 at 11:30 a.m.
Stop in the library to make a craft on March 3 at 5:30 p.m.

The Everett White Story'
CADIZ -- How did someone from a small town like Cadiz end up hijacking an airplane and staying in Cuba?
The intriguing story is a tale Dr. Scott Pendleton will weave about Everett White, from his roots in Cadiz to his arrest by the FBI. "From Cadiz to Cuba: The Everett White Story" will be presented Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Puskarich Public Library in Cadiz along with other Black History tidbits from Harrison County.
"Before the 1960s," notes an item in the library's February/March newsletter, "an afternoon walking around an airport, having a snack and watching planes take off and land was an activity enjoyed by many people. However, in the late 1950s and early 1960s, political activities between Cuba and the United States led to unhappy, political revolutionaries wanting to leave Cuba for the United States by hijacking large airliners with guns or other firepower to bring them to a sale political haven in the United States."

50-year reunion for Oct. 8
STEUBENVILLE -- Members of Steubenville High School's Class of 1972 will be holding their 50-year reunion on Oct. 8 at Scaffidi's Restaurant and Tavern in Steubenville.

Smithfield group offers student scholarships, teacher grant
SMITHFIELD -- Friends of Smithfield will award a $500 general scholarship to a high school senior.
Applicants must be a descendant of a Smithfield High School graduate. The deadline to apply is May 15, and forms are available in local area schools.

Friends of Smithfield CDC is again offering the $500 Octa W. Foster Classroom Innovation Grant, which is open to any teachers in the Buckeye Local School District.

Brooke Cook by the Book
Recipe Club to meet Tuesday
WELLSBURG -- The Brooke County Public Library's adults-only Cook by the Book Recipe Club will meet at noon on Tuesday.
Every month, the club works with a theme. Those participating choose a recipe, make it up and bring it into the library with a copy of the recipe.
Club members then share the finished product, swap recipes and engage in fellowship.

13th Amendment topic for Ohio Valley Civil War Roundtable
WHEELING -- The Ohio Valley Civil War Roundtable will present a lecture on the historical background and legacy of the 13th Amendment presented by area resident Roger Micker on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. inside the historic court room at the West Virginia Independence Hall, located at 1528 Market St., Wheeling.
Micker is president of the Civil War Roundtable; a West Virginia History Hero award winner; a participant in the Ohio Connections' Think History program; a member of the Confluence Foundation for the Preservation of American History; and served on the Ohio Governor's and Ohio County's 150th Civil War Remembrance Committees.
The roundtable welcomes public attendance. There is no charge to tour the hall or attend the lecture, but donations to the roundtable are appreciated.
Lenten Bible study on 'He Chose the Nails' starts March 2
WINTERSVILLE -- Two Ridges Presbyterian Church, 1085 Canton Road, Wintersville, welcomes the community to a Lenten Bible study it will host every Wednesday during Lent, beginning March 2.
It offers two opportunities to participate with an afternoon group meeting at 1 p.m. and an evening group gathering at 5:30 p.m. for what will include a light supper.

Auxiliary members to make Easter baskets for veterans
WEIRTON -- The Tri-State Marine Corps Club Auxiliary met Feb. 14 with President Shirley Brecht opening the meeting.
Prayer was offered by Chaplain Mary Ann Smith following the prayer list by Secretary Marcy Spano and the Pledge of Allegiance.
Spano reported on get well cards sent to auxiliary members and read the minutes from the January meeting, which were approved.
The treasurer's report was read, and the books will be audited within the next two weeks, it was noted.
The group voted not to have refreshments at meetings until December.
Members will make their own Easter baskets for veterans at the Weirton Geriatric Center, and Spano will deliver them. Mary Ann Smith won the 50-50 drawing and donated it back to the treasury.
The next meeting will be held at 6 p.m on March 14 at the VFW hall in Weirton.
'The Greatest Showman' to be screened at Puskarich Library
CADIZ -- The Puskarich Public Library, located at 200 E. Market St., Cadiz, will provide a screening of "The Greatest Showman" as part of its movie night.
