Heinz History scholar Samuel W. Black to speak at WAMCC
WEIRTON -- Scholar Samuel W. Black, director of African-American programs at the Sen. John Heinz History Center, will speak at the Weirton Area Museum and Cultural Center on Saturday, beginning at 11 a.m.
His lecture, titled, "Martin R. Delany: Black Nationalist in Contrast," is open to the public, and admission is free, although donations are appreciated.
Black will speak on Martin Robison Delany, who was born in Charles Town, Va., (now West Virginia) in 1812 and was a physician, author, abolitionist, the first African American field officer in the U.S. Army and one of the earliest African Americans to encourage a return to Africa.
Black has more than 26 years' experience in museum and historical society institutions. He has served as manuscript curator for some of the most important historical resources in African American history, according to a news release. An award-winning curator, writer, editor, lecturer and researcher, Black has numerous publications in peer review journals, encyclopedias, books, magazines and newspapers and has written or edited three books: "Soul Soldiers: African Americans and the Vietnam Era" (editor); "Through the Lens of Allen E. Cole: A Photographic History of African Americans in Cleveland, Ohio" (co-author); and "The Civil War in Pennsylvania: The African American Experience" (editor).
Light refreshments will be served following the lecture.
An all-volunteer organization, the Weirton Area Museum and Cultural Center is dedicated to preserving the area's history and culture for future generations and is located at 3149 Main St. in downtown Weirton. Sacred Heart of Mary to host Wednesday Lenten dinners
WEIRTON -- Weirton Sacred Heart of Mary Church, located at 200 Preston Ave., Weirton, will continue to host its annual Lenten dinners again this year on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Dinners will start March 2 and continue on March 9, 16, 23, 30 and April 6. There will be no dinners the week of Easter.
The menu will include baked fish, fried fish, fried shrimp, haluski, macaroni and cheese, french fries, coleslaw, pierogis (potato and cheese or sauerkraut), homemade desserts and bread.
Patrons may dine-in or call ahead for takeout at (304) 723-1648.
Steubenville City Schools
retirees to meet March 10
STEUBENVILLE -- Retirees of Steubenville City Schools met Feb. 10 at Theo Yanni's in Weirton for lunch.
A sympathy card was circulated and signed. Thank-you cards from the adult recipients of the group's Christmas charity, with a little information on each recipient, were circulated.
All retirees are welcome to join the group on March 10 at The Ville in Steubenville and on April 14 at Capraro's Restaurant in Hopedale.
St. Agnes CWC plans luncheon for children on March 5
MINGO JUNCTION -- St. Agnes Catholic Women's Club met Feb. 15, beginning with the Rev. James Dunfee leading the group in prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance.
President Pat Cramblett presided at the business meeting, announcing that the Mother of Hope Deanery meeting will be held at Holy Family Church in Steubenville on March 27 at 1:30 p.m.
Discussion was held about completed projects, including the painting of the church interior, the sound system and the streaming system.
The CWC will have a hot dog luncheon for the children making their first confession on March 5. Dorothy Mazik, Karen Giuliani and Debbie Riccardo volunteered to work at this event.
The next meeting will be held on March 15. Leanne Hutton, Kathy Coldebella and Karen Giuliani will serve as hostesses.
Giuliani won the door prize and Hutton, the 50/50 drawing.
Dunfee led the closing prayer and blessing for the meal, which was served by Mazik and Joanne Raha.
Four Seasons Seniors to hold March 16 meeting at Undo's
WEIRTON -- The Four Season Senior Citizens held their February meeting at Undo's in Weirton with President Gene Viola presiding.
Tony LaRosa gave the opening prayer followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and the singing of "God Bless America."
After dinner, committee reports were read. Birthdays were acknowledged. A discussion was held regarding any changes to the existing bylaws.
Laura Mamula won the 50-50 drawing. Other prize winners were Norma Yoho, Ron Fallert, Larry Purks, John Corrigan, Carolyn Shaffer, Tony LaRosa, Doloras LaRosa, Paul Zink, Gene Viola.
The next meeting will be March 16 at Undo's. Members can choose either baked or fried fish or turkey breast.
Entertainment will provided by the Ron Retzer Trio.
LaRosa gave the closing prayer.
Friends to perform Sunday
at East Springfield church
EAST SPRINGFIELD -- Christ United Methodist Church will welcome Friends from Wintersville United Methodist Church to share with their ministry of music during the 11 a.m. worship service on Sunday.
"Please join us for this special time of worship," noted a spokesperson for the church which is located at 203 Church St., East Springfield, near the intersection of state Route 43 and county Road 39.

spay-neuter clinic in April
WELLSBURG --The Brooke County Animal Welfare League will hold their next low-cost spay and neuter clinic, RASCAL, an acronym for Roaming Animal Sterilization Clinic at Low Cost, on April 9 and 10 at the American Legion Post at 808 N. Fifth St., Steubenville.
Any interested pet owners should call (304) 374-4443 as appointments are limited and required. No walk-ins will be accepted. Appointments are not limited to Brooke County residents.
