The Sycamore Youth Center at 301 N. Fourth St., Steubenville, has develped a Civics and Community Leadership course for middle and high school students. This program has been made possible by a $5,000 grant from the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio and through the engagement of local civic leaders, according to Bobbyjon Bauman, center CEO. The goal of the program is to educate the youth of Steubenville on the process of how federal, state and local government work and to involve them in opportunities to develop into young community leaders. "So far, the students have been learning about the history of the American government and the three-branch structure of the federal government," Bauman said. "Future classes will include lessons on how laws are made and upheld as constitutional, different agencies and programs available through the government, understanding the voting process and engaging the community as a future leader. The class includes guest speakers who so far have been Steubenville Mayor Jerry Barilla, top photo, center front, and Marine Corps Sgt. James Bonestell. The class is faciliated by Sycamore Youth Center staff members Brendan Slovacek and Jenna Edwards. For inquiries on how to have a teen participate in the class, contact Bauman at (740) 409-2986.
