Chevron awards presented

to New Cumberland Lions

NEW CUMBERLAND -- Several Chevron awards were presented when the New Cumberland Lions Club met Feb. 22 with President Andrew Kefer presiding.

Chevrons were awarded to Lions for 10 to 65 years of membership in the organization, including: 10 years, Joe Ghenne, Joyce Young and Cole Young; 15 years, Amy Grimes; 20 years, John Ashcraft and Rick Tinsky; 35 years, Chuck Mitchell; and posthumously Edwin Flowers for 65 years.

Tinsky offered the prayer, and the Pledge of Allegiance was led by Betsy Wells. The minutes were accepted as read and the treasurer's report was placed on file.

Communications received included thank-you notes from Brenda Greathouse for a donation given in memory of Lion Don Greathouse; from the New Cumberland Hall of Fame for the donation of cookies; and from the W.Va. Lions Sight Conservation Foundation Inc., for donations in the names of Lion Barbara Blackwell and Lion John Edwards. The club received requests for donations from the New Cumberland Hall of Fame Committee and from Camp Horseshoe asking for sponsorship of a student for the summer Leadership Camp.

A moment of silence was observed in remembrance of Lion members John Edwards, Don Greathouse and Edwin Flowers.

In unfinished business, Joyce Young reported on the Feb. 16 zone meeting that was held by Zoom.

The club voted to send $210 to the Chester Lions Club so that the Chester, Newell and New Cumberland clubs can send two students to Camp Horseshoe.

Feedback was requested on future fundraisers and service projects. Several possible projects were discussed. Members are requested to present suggestions in written form for continued discussion.

Under new business, it was announced that regular meetings will resume once a month through June on the second Tuesday. The dates are March 8, April 12, May 10 and June 14. Board meetings will be on those dates at 6 p.m. with the regular meeting following in the City Building at 6:30 p.m. with dinner served.

Pleasant Hill Volunteer Fire Department fish frys to begin

STEUBENVILLE -- The Pleasant Hill Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary is holding a weekly Lenten fish fry beginning Friday at the Pleasant Hill Volunteer Fire Department at 3297 state Route 213.

The Friday fish fries will continue through Lent and offer dine-in or carryout. They will run from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Orders can be placed by calling (740) 282-9601.

The menu includes a fish, shrimp or chicken tenders dinner that includes french fries and cole slaw, $10; fish sandwich, $7; shrimp basket or chicken tenders, $7; macaroni and cheese or haluski, $3; french fries, $2; and cole slaw or applesauce, $1.

Lenten services announced

for Smithfield area churches

SMITHFIELD -- Evening Lenten services were planned for churches in the Smithfield and surrounding areas during a meeting of the Smithfield Church Council held at the Smithfield Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Jim Taylor presiding.

The 7 p.m. services are:

≤ March 6: Smithfield Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Mark Carpino of the Smithfield Evangelical Friends Church;

≤ March 13, Smithfield United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Craig Smith of the Christian Church;

≤ March 20, Mount Moriah Church, with the Rev. Melody Essex of Shaffer AME Church;

≤ March 27, Shaffer Chapel, with the Rev. Nora Taylor;

≤ April 3, Smithfield Friends Church with the Rev. Arthur Wells of the Mount Moriah Church; and

≤ April 10, Smithfield Christian Church with the the Rev. Evan Daugherty of the Smithfield United Methodist Church,

Taylor was named leader of the group, and Cathy Hartline is secretary. The Lenten services are a longtime tradition of the group. Its other plans include a children's project in August. Stan Borkowski is in charge of arrangements. A Christmas community program is in the planning as well.

WELLSBURG -- Anyone needing help creating an e-mail account, downloading e-books and learning other Internet and computer skills is welcome to visit the Brooke County Public Library from 11 a.m. to noon on the first and third Monday of each month.

A representative of the West Virginia University Extension Service will teach those and other skills.

Screenings of 'Addams Family,' 'Ghostbusters: Afterlife' set

The Brooke County Public Library and its Follansbee branch will be presenting free screenings of the following movies:

"The Addams Family 2," rated PG, at 10:30 a.m. March 12 in Wellsburg and March 26 in Follansbee; "Ghostbusters: Afterlife," rated PG-13, at 10:30 a.m. March 12 in Follansbee and March 26 in Wellsburg; "Beauty and the Beast," rated PG, at 10:30 a.m. March 19 in Wellsburg; and "The Pagemaster," rated G, at 10:30 a.m. March 19 in Follansbee.

Brooke Book Club to discuss 'Sisters First' on March 31

WELLSBURG -- The Brooke County Public Library Book Club will meet in person and virtually at 5 p.m. March 31 to discuss "Sisters First: Stories from Our Wild and Wonderful Life," by Jenna Bush Hager and Barbara Pierce Bush, at 5 p.m. March 31.

Participants will receive the book they will discuss next month.
