Memorial service March 19

for Willow Grove miners

NEFFS -- On March 16, 1940, the Willow Grove Mine in Belmont County was stunned when an explosion inside the mine killed 72 area miners -- a day that the United Mine Workers of America and the local community have never forgotten.

A monument was placed at the Willow Grove Mine site in Neffs, Ohio, to let the public remember that disaster,

On March 19, the United Mine Workers will conduct a memorial service on county Road 4, Neffs, near the mine portal at 11 a.m. to lay wreaths. Speakers will join with family members and friends to remember the lives lost.

The public is invited to attend.

It had been scheduled for Saturday but was delayed a week because of anticipated bad weather.

Quarter auction Sunday at

Mingo Knights of Columbus

MINGO JUNCTION -- A quarter auction to benefit the Mingo Knights of Columbus Hall roof fund will be held Sunday at the Knights hall, located at 117 Legion Drive, Mingo Junction.

Doors open at noon, and the auction begins at 1 p.m. A donation of $5 includes one paddle with extra paddles available for $2 each.

There will be various vendors on hand. The fundraiser will include a 50-50 drawing, a Chinese auction and concessions. For information, call (740) 535-8037.

East Springfield Community

Center having dinner Thursday

EAST SPRINGFIELD -- The East Springfield Community Recreation and Service Center will host a fundraiser dinner from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday.

The menu includes beef stroganoff, mashed potatoes, green beans, dessert, bread and drink.

Hancock Retired Employees having March 15 luncheon

WEIRTON -- The Hancock County Association of Retired School Employees is having a luncheon and meeting at St. Thomas Episcopal Church on Three Springs Drive, Weirton, on March 15, beginning at noon.

Jefferson County Farm Bureau committee to meet Thursday

SMITHFIELD -- The Jefferson County Farm Bureau committee will hold its first meeting of the new year on Thursday at 11 a.m.

It will be held in the former bank building in front of Crossroads Christian Church, Wintersville. It is handicapped accessible with parking permitted at the door for those who need it, according to Jeanne Roberts, P&E chairman.

With March 21-27 being Agriculture Week, one project is to collect baby items for the first-baby born during the week. Members unable to attend the meeting can call Roberts to arrange meeting at a designated area to pick up items for the baby basket.

The group still has Agriculture Week placemats which members are invited to pick up and to take to a favorite eating place that uses them. Membership for Farm Bureau is under way, and new members are being welcomed as well as those who have not paid their dues as yet for the year.

Future project ideas for the Jefferson County Fair Week are needed, it was noted, as well as Ag in the classroom. Pennies collected during the time lapse in the meetings can be collected at this time. They go toward the purchase of ag-related books for elementary schools in the county.

Osage Cemetery Association schedules March 21 meeting

TORONTO -- The Osage Cemetery Association will hold an informational meeting on March 21 at 4 p.m. at the Osage Church, township Road 242, Toronto.

Those with family members or loved ones who have been laid to rest at the cemetery, owners of burial plots or those interested in helping to preserve the future of the cemetery and church are welcome to attend to discuss the improvements of both the cemetery and the church.

Those with Christmas decorations on loved ones' graves are asked that they be removed by March 15.

Irondale VFD is organizing first Spring Fling craft show

IRONDALE -- The Irondale Volunteer Fire Department will be hold its first Spring Fling craft show on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Saline Township Complex in Hammondsville.

The fundraiser will include local crafters and vendors, baked goods, a Chinese auction and food concessions. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the local Boy Scout Troop 49.
