Kiera O'Brien earns first-place in state for her MLK essay

STEUBENVILLE -- Kiera O'Brien, a senior at Steubenville High School, was awarded first place for her essay submitted in the 2022 Martin Luther King Jr. Art, Essay and Multimedia Contest, hosted by the Ohio Civil Rights Commission with support from PNC, Honda of America and Wright State University.

O'Brien's essay was selected out of hundreds of other essay submissions statewide to the prompt to "describe an event of injustice that you have seen or experienced and explain what you did or would do to fight against injustice like Dr. King?"

In her essay, O'Brien, the daughter of attorneys Melvin and Theresa O'Brien, used "the experiences of her parents, the inequalities that women face in the legal profession and her participation in the high school mock trial team, according to a news release.

During her time with mock trial, O'Brien won several best witness awards from the Ohio Center for Law-Related Education. She also received additional honors and recognitions, was awarded an Amazon gift card and was the recipient of letters of recognition for her accomplishment. She was recognized by Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine.

for Willow Grove miners

NEFFS -- On March 16, 1940, the Willow Grove Mine in Belmont County was stunned when an explosion inside the mine killed 72 area miners -- a day that the United Mine Workers of America and the local community have never forgotten.

A monument was placed at the Willow Grove Mine site in Neffs, Ohio, to let the public remember that disaster,

On March 19, the United Mine Workers will conduct a memorial service on county Road 4, Neffs, near the mine portal at 11 a.m. to lay wreaths. Speakers will join with family members and friends to remember the lives lost.

The public is invited to attend.

The service had been scheduled for Saturday but is being delayed one week because of the threat of inclement weather.

Drive-through dinner

at Hill Top Fellowship Hall

TORONTO -- Hill Top Presbyterian Church will hold a soup and sandwich drive-through dinner fundraiser at the fellowship hall, located at the intersection of county Road 46 and state Route 213, Toronto.

It will be held March 17 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

"There's no need to leave your vehicle -- just drive through and pick up your dinner," a spokesperson noted.

The menu and prices are: One quart of soup, $7 for vegetable, chicken noodle, broccoli cheese or chilli; sandwiches: $5 for shredded chicken and barbecued ham sandwiches; and $2 for hot dogs.

Spay-neuter clinic in April

accepting appointments

WELLSBURG --The Brooke County Animal Welfare League will hold their next low-cost spay and neuter clinic, RASCAL, an acronym for Roaming Animal Sterilization Clinic at Low Cost, on April 9 and 10 at the Steubenville American Legion Post at 808 N. Fifth St., Steubenville.

Any interested pet owners should call (304) 374-4443 as appointments are limited and required. No walk-ins will be accepted.

Appointments are not limited to Brooke County residents.

Don Hutchison presented award for 50 years of service

BRILLIANT -- Trustees together for a meeting and an award presentation at a Brilliant Volunteer Fire Department session held recently at the Wells Township Building recently were J.J. Kamerer, Ben Batenburg, Rodney Roe and Don Hutchinson.

At that time, Hutchinson, who has served with the department for 50 years, becoming part of the team when he was 17 years old, was applauded for his 27 years as fire chief. He was presented a plaque for his efforts through the years.

The fire chief does ambulance runs with Wells Township and can be found at Buckeye North Elementary School handing out coats for the students as well.

He and his wife, Diane, former administrator of the Jefferson County Christian School in Wintersville before her retirement, have two children, Matthew, who graduated from the Christian school and is a 2007 graduate of West Point as a major, and a daughter, Mrs. Dan (Mallory) Monas, and five grandchildren.

He stressed that the fire department is looking for volunteers constantly.

The department assists with the area holiday food drive, with helping to collect and pack goods to go to residents in need.
